The company is based in Trondheim, Norway and was founded in December 2006, originating from research at NTNU's Department of Energy and Process Engineering. ChapDrive is working with Statoil on concept design of a 5 MW hydraulic transmission and expects the first prototype wind turbine with the ChapDrive transmission in 2012. The company plans commercial ramp-up within 3 to 5 years. ChapDrive secured NOK 86m (approximately €11m) in additional funding to enable commercialization.

Proceeds will be used to expand research and development, install utility-scale megawatt load testing equipment, and hire and train workers. The company plans to launch production of permanent magnet generators with an annual capacity of about 4,000 units in approximately three years.
