Overview
Congenica offers a clinical genomic analysis software and data platform that enables rapid interpretation of complex genomic data for hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, academic medical centres and pharmaceutical companies. Its software performs up to 20x faster than industry averages, delivers a 30% higher analytical yield and can reduce genomic interpretation costs by up to 95%. Born out of research from the Wellcome Sanger Institute and the NHS, Congenica is the exclusive Clinical Decision Support partner for the UK NHS Genomic Medicine Service and supports customers across 18 countries. The company plans to accelerate commercialization of rare and inherited cancer applications and expand its platform into somatic cancer, wellness and pharmaceutical collaborations. Product development priorities include integration with existing electronic health systems and fully automated interpretation capability, underpinned by expanded machine-learning capabilities. The company completed a $50m Series C in November 2020 to fund these initiatives. Congenica provides the Sapientia diagnostic decision‑support platform and associated clinical services that enable clinicians to interrogate the human genome to identify disease‑causing variants. The company is led by CEO Dr David Atkins and was recently awarded a multi‑year contract as the exclusive provider of Diagnostic Decision Support Services for the NHS Genomic Medicine Service. Congenica said it will use new funds to accelerate commercial scale‑up and further penetrate international markets, with an initial focus on the US and China. It also plans to develop an enhanced product platform that harnesses statistics and machine‑learning technology to augment clinicians’ diagnostic decision‑making. Following the latest raise, Congenica has increased its total funding to date to £26m ($33.5m). Congenica is a Cambridge, UK–based provider of clinical genome analysis technology centered on its Sapientia platform. Sapientia analyzes genome-scale DNA data to produce comprehensive diagnostic reports that facilitate clinical decision-making and inform R&D. Since its launch in 2014 the technology has been adopted across the UK, China, the US and other EU countries and has been validated by independent institutes and clinicians including Genomics England under the UK 100K Genomes Project. The company plans to use the £8m Series B to sustain the commercial roll-out of Sapientia by accelerating international growth and expanding customer support. It will also invest in further product development and innovation. The round included existing investors Cambridge Innovation Capital and Amadeus Capital Partners and new investor Parkwalk Advisors; Parkwalk's Alastair Kilgour will join the board. Congenica is led by CEO Tom Weaver, COO Dr Martin Dougherty and Chief Business Officer Dr Shikha O’Brien.
