Overview
Exciting Instruments is a University of Sheffield health‑tech spinout founded in 2021 that commercialises a benchtop single‑molecule fluorescence spectroscopy platform called EI‑FLEX. The EI‑FLEX is an affordable, two‑colour system enabling smFRET and FCS experiments at the benchtop without optical tables or dark rooms, with real‑time data visualisation, cloud connectivity, high‑throughput processing and automation. The platform is positioned to broaden access to single‑molecule studies across pharma, healthcare and industrial research, supporting protein and nucleic acid interaction studies and drug discovery workflows. The company plans to use the new funding to develop commercial partnerships, expand its team, and evolve its products. Exciting Instruments emphasises practical workflows and automation to reduce specialist infrastructure requirements and increase throughput for life‑science labs. Exciting Instruments builds the EI-FLEX, a relatively low-cost benchtop instrument combined with advanced software to perform single-molecule spectroscopy. The device is intended to replace more complex and costly existing technology and broaden access to single-molecule measurements in biophysics and life-science labs. The company says the technique could enable new discoveries across biophysics, drug development and diagnostics and aims to make the instrument a standard tool in biophysics labs. Exciting Instruments was established in August 2021 as a spinout from the University of Sheffield and is a joint venture with Bulldozer Limited, which provides digital, commercial and financial support. Robert Bell of Bulldozer has joined the board; Chris Sellars of Hentons Corporate Finance supported the raise. The company has won two orders within its first year and plans further sales worldwide.
