Homeroom

Overview

Homeroom is a two-year-old, 12-person, San Francisco–based marketplace and software platform that provides free tools for after-school program organizers to schedule classes, organize sign-ups, and accept, process and track payments. The company targets program organizers—often parent volunteers—who currently manage offerings via email and spreadsheets, and it also serves as a recommendation engine to surface enrichment options to families. Homeroom monetizes by taking a cut from class vendors each time a parent signs up, with vendors paying to extend their reach into new school districts. Founders Cassandra Espinoza Stewart (formerly an analyst at Greylock) and Christina Walker (a former teacher who designed after-school programs) built the product to broaden access to affordable programming. The company is pursuing a sizable market opportunity: roughly 5.7 million elementary school children are enrolled in after-school enrichment programs in the U.S., part of an estimated $23 billion industry where programs can cost from the low thousands to over $10,000 per child per year. Down the road Homeroom may offer installment financing so parents can make smaller payments over time, which the founders view as a potential revenue stream; its recent $3.5M seed round will help advance growth.
