ioLight produces a high-resolution portable microscope that captures and displays images on tablets and smartphones with resolution better than 1 μm. The device is among the first of its kind in the UK and is sold to customers including The Eden Project, universities, schools, vets, pathologists, and micro-engineering companies. The microscopes are priced at £700 and carry gross margins of 55–70% depending on sales commission. ioLight is developing a low-cost fluorescence microscope prototype under an Innovate UK grant to offer fluorescence capability at a fraction of the typical £15,000+ price. The grant-funded project (total value £88,994; 70% funded by Innovate UK) includes development of enabling features such as an Android app. Crowdcube campaign funds will be used to recruit sales and admin staff, support sales and marketing (PR and exhibitions), and for product development to increase sales.
