Overview
Literal Labs develops logic-based AI models (inspired by the Tsetlin machine) that the company says are orders of magnitude faster, more energy-efficient, and more explainable than neural networks. Benchmarking cited in the article reports 54x faster inferencing and 52x less energy consumption than equivalent neural networks, and 250x faster performance than XGBoost on some tasks. The company was spun out of Newcastle University by Dr. Alex Yakovlev and Dr. Rishad Shafik and is headquartered in Newcastle, England. Noel Hurley, a former Arm VP, was appointed CEO in 2023; Leon Fedden joined as CTO and the team doubled headcount from 6 to 12 in 2024. Literal Labs targets EdgeAI customers that need to replace GPU-heavy models, operate in regulated/explainability-sensitive environments, or require more efficient models for battery-powered products. The company plans to bring its first commercial product to market later in 2025 and to grow its engineering team using the newly raised capital.
