Paperspace offers GPU-powered servers and a software layer designed to help developers build, deploy and manage AI and machine learning applications. The company released Gradient, a serverless tool that abstracts infrastructure so customers don’t have to manage underlying compute. Paperspace supports GPUs and a range of other powerful chips to run AI/ML workloads. It positions itself as a tooling and software provider rather than a direct competitor to major cloud vendors, enabling workloads on its infrastructure or on mainstream cloud providers. The team launched out of Y Combinator in Winter 2015 after starting the project in 2014. With $13M in new funding and $19M total raised, Paperspace has capital to expand its platform and software offerings. Paperspace builds browser-streamed virtual desktops designed to simplify deployment and management of VDI. The product allocates a dedicated GPU to each VM for performance and offers features like machine cloning, VPN and Active Directory integration, one-click backups, monitoring, custom templates, and shared drives. The founders say the service is simpler to install and manage than legacy VDI and cloud alternatives, and they announced general availability alongside the fundraise. To achieve the performance goals they ran their own infrastructure and invested in two data centers located in co-location facilities in California and New York. Target markets called out include finance, healthcare, education, legal, and other VDI use cases (and even gaming or complex CAD workloads). The company is a Y Combinator Winter 2015 graduate. Paperspace offers a service that places a user’s primary computer in the cloud so any connected device can log into the full desktop. The company pitches that "every screen becomes a portal into your workspace," allowing low-powered machines to run demanding applications. Paperspace says even a MacBook Air or a Chromebook can run complex 3D models when the computer is cloud-hosted. The product focuses on enabling high-performance computing and full workspace portability across devices. Technical.ly reports that Paperspace raised $2.8 million in a funding round.
