Overview

Root Global offers the RootOS platform to help companies across the food system manage their climate footprint and reduce GHG emissions. Led by Maurice Hensl and Eric Oancea and based in Berlin, the company launched RootOS in October 2023. Since launch it has onboarded some of Europe’s largest food & beverage players, including the largest dairy plant in Europe and the world’s largest fast-food chain. Through those customers the system works with over 10,000 farmers to help manage and reduce millions of tons of CO2e. The company raised €8m in seed funding and intends to use the proceeds to expand operations and accelerate product development. Root Global positions itself as the "carbon OS" for the food industry, offering a platform that standardizes activity data and calculation methodology so stakeholders can calculate lifecycle carbon scores. Its software targets manufacturers, food processors and retailers in the food and beverage sector, enabling companies to measure and guide decisions to mitigate emissions. Co-founder Eric Oancea says the product is intended to create decision-making infrastructure to reach zero emissions and to allow stakeholders to "speak the same carbon language." The company frames its work as foundational for product-level labeling and for companies setting science-based targets to cut scope 3 emissions. Root highlights the scale of the problem (citing roughly 16.5 billion tons of carbon equivalents from the food system) and aims to help businesses identify where to invest in supply chains to reduce footprints. The startup recently closed external financing to advance its platform.
