SetSail

400 Concar Dr, San Mateo, CA, 94402, US

Overview

SetSail developed a data infrastructure that connects email, calendars, CRM and marketing automation to create a 360-degree view of sales activity and enable pay-for-pipeline compensation. Its original product was a sales compensation system that pays reps based on pipeline position rather than only on closed deals. The company has layered generative AI on top of that dataset, adding natural-language questioning that translates user prompts into SQL to return answers instead of static dashboards. New capabilities let users ask which deals are close, which reps are struggling, and who is meeting with decision-makers this week. SetSail says the underlying dataset and infrastructure have standalone value beyond the original compensation use case. Financially, the company announced an $11 million investment and has raised almost $50 million to date. The company was founded in 2018. SetSail builds a sales-compensation platform that connects to CRM, email, calendar and other systems to surface signals about deal progress. It uses machine learning and behavioral-science approaches to trigger payments to reps at progress points rather than a single post-close commission. The company grew from five customers at the start of 2020 to more than 20 by year-end, including Cisco, Dropbox and HubSpot. It reports over 5,000 sales reps using the platform. SetSail had 35 employees with five more hired and plans to reach 70 by the end of the year, and expects a hybrid office presence across San Francisco, New York and Tel Aviv. Financially, the company recently raised a $26 million Series A, bringing total funding to $37 million. SetSail builds a machine-learning platform that identifies objective customer signals and awards points to sales reps so companies can compensate progress before a sale closes. The system analyzes appointments, emails and call transcripts to discover signals that indicate deal momentum and the relevant signals can vary by customer. To prevent gaming, SetSail relies on objective data rather than self-reported information from reps. The founders, three former Google engineers led by CEO Haggai Levi, left Google in 2018 to commercialize the approach they had prototyped internally. Customers include Dropbox, Lyft and Pendo, which are using the product to incentivize desirable sales behaviors, especially during the pandemic when sales cycles may lengthen. Financially, the company has raised a total of $11 million to date.
