Overview

Teachmint builds an "ed-infra" platform that lets teachers and institutes create virtual classrooms via smartphones, engage students, assign tasks, conduct attendance, and collect fees. The 16-month-old Indian startup says it has amassed over 10 million users and that more than 4,000 institutes in India and overseas use its service. Teachmint's model emphasizes direct relationships between teachers and students, positioning it differently from larger marketplaces such as Byju's, Unacademy and Vedantu. The company plans to deploy the new capital to hire across product, technology and design, and said it will soon offer employees its biggest stock buyback option. Earlier this year Teachmint was approached with a reported $400 million acquisition offer from one of two Indian edtech giants and declined. To date the company has raised over $115 million in capital. Teachmint provides a mobile-first, video-first infrastructure that lets teachers create virtual classrooms, engage students, assign tasks, take attendance and collect fees from a smartphone. The app is lightweight (14MB), supports 10 Indian languages in addition to English, and more than 75% of teachers use their smartphones to conduct classes. Teachmint has amassed over 1 million teachers across more than 5,000 Indian cities; usage is growing over 100% month-over-month and students consumed over 25 million live classes in the last month. The company builds much of its streaming and classroom technology in-house rather than relying on third-party vendors, which it says reduces per-class cost and improves interactivity. It recently launched Teachmint for Institute to serve schools and colleges and plans to expand product offerings, hire talent, and make the platform available internationally. Investors and partners have taken notice, and the company has raised multiple rounds to fuel growth and product expansion. Teachmint offers a mobile-first, video-first platform that lets teachers start live classes and handle associated tasks from Android, iPhone or the web. The all-in-one product supports live teaching, doubt-clearing sessions, attendance, webinars, fee collection, student discovery, phone support and tests. The app is available in 10 local languages and is highly localized for India-specific needs. In under 10 months since launching its product, more than 700,000 teachers from over 1,500 cities and towns have signed up. Teachmint is currently not monetizing and is prioritizing reaching more teachers and expanding its offerings rather than immediate revenue. The company is open to strategic acquisitions of smaller startups as part of its growth strategy. Teachmint is a six-month-old Bengaluru-based online teaching startup that helps offline tutors digitize their classrooms, engage online with students, and reach a wider base. The company provides tools and services to enable tutors to run classes digitally and expand student reach. Teachmint raised $3.5 million in a seed funding round led by Lightspeed India, with existing investors Better Capital and Titan Capital participating. The fresh capital will be used to build Teachmint’s product suite, introduce additional offerings, and increase geographic reach to more tutors. In August the startup raised an undisclosed round of funding.
