Overview

Tealium provides a real-time customer data orchestration platform that connects customer data across web, mobile, offline, and IoT devices. Its integration ecosystem supports more than 1,300 client-side and server-side vendors and technologies, enabling brands to create a unified customer data infrastructure. The Tealium Customer Data Hub includes tag management, an API hub, a customer data platform with machine learning, and data management solutions designed to make customer data more valuable, actionable, and secure. More than 1,000 businesses worldwide use Tealium to power their customer data strategies. Led by CEO Jeff Lunsford and based in San Diego, the company recently increased its valuation to $1.2 billion after a new funding round. The company says the new capital will be used to fund accelerated product innovation. Tealium offers a cloud-based big data platform that centralizes and structures disparate customer information, originally starting with tag management to optimize marketing and expanding well beyond web and commerce. The platform integrates and enriches data in real time to create audiences while providing data governance and fidelity. Tealium counts customers including Facebook, IBM and Visa, and has seen a 300% year-over-year increase in visitor profiles created. The company is expanding into new data sources such as IoT, smart home and smart office hardware and plans to apply more AI and machine learning to improve predictions. Tealium says it is close to profitability and is projected to make $100 million in revenue this year. To date the company has raised $160 million in total capital. Tealium builds enterprise tag management software used to manage and deploy analytics and marketing tags. The company is led by Jeff Lunsford. Tealium said the new funding will be used for product innovation, to accelerate product integration, and to expand its global footprint. The capital is described as growth capital and came from its existing investors. The company has previously raised financing from firms such as Bain Capital, Battery Ventures, Georgian Partners, Presidio Venture Partners, Silver Lake Waterman, and Tenaya Capital. The latest injection takes Tealium's total capital raised to north of $100 million. Tealium began as a tag-management provider and has expanded into a real-time data platform (AudienceStream) that helps marketers integrate customer data across more than 20 systems. Its core product set enables firms to move from batch file transfers to real-time data delivery for personalized messaging. About 50 of Tealium’s 500+ customers are currently using AudienceStream. CEO Jeff Lunsford describes the company as a neutral data layer that other apps and vendors can feed off rather than a personalization vendor itself. The company plans to expand internationally and to move beyond marketing applications for its data platform. Tealium reported organic sales growth of 138% last year, indicating strong commercial traction. Tealium builds a tag management system that codifies JavaScript tags to provide clean data streams for enterprise marketers on websites, mobile sites, and mobile apps, enabling drag-and-drop tag management and tag editing without additional IT resources. The company said it will use the $20 million financing to grow all business units, including engineering, sales, customer service, and marketing. Tealium reported strong 1Q2014 operating performance, claiming 120% revenue growth and 100% growth in enterprise customers worldwide. The financing brings Tealium’s total capital raised to $47.5 million to date; prior backers include Battery Ventures and Tenaya Capital. The team’s experience dates to the late 1990s, when they worked at Webside Story to develop the first JavaScript tags for website data. Silver Lake Waterman framed its investment as support for Tealium’s global expansion and called Tealium a market leader in the space.
