Tern is a commerce technology company that provides a home pickup returns service to make returns easier for consumers, less expensive for merchants, and better for the planet. The service addresses packing, printing, and transportation pain points in the first mile of returns by consolidating pickups and minimizing the trips an item makes during a return. Tern says this consolidation can reduce the carbon impact of the first mile of returns by orders of magnitude versus the current hub-and-spoke model. At launch the company announced a partnership with Swap.com to offer home pickup for consignment clients and simplify returns on the Swap.com marketplace. Prior to launch Tern ran an invite-only beta in the San Francisco Bay Area that improved the returns experience and decreased logistical steps. The company recently raised $5M in seed funding and plans to use the financing to expand engineering, sales, and operations and to bolster customer acquisition and service area coverage. Tern is backed by venture firms and angel investors including Resolute Ventures, Tekton Ventures, Partech Partners, OVO Group, and Cyber Mentor Fund.
