Overview
Topship is a digital freight forwarder that helps African merchants export and import parcels and cargo, with a deliberate focus on air freight. The company was founded in 2020 by CEO Moses Enenwali and went live in March 2021 with CTO Junaid Babatunde. Topship serves roughly 1,500 merchants moving cargo from Nigeria to more than 150 countries and can accept inbound deliveries from the U.S., the U.K. and China. Its revenue comes from selling shipping insurance and taking a margin on transactions, and it is exploring additional streams including trade financing and customs clearance charges. The startup reports about 50% month-on-month revenue growth since joining Y Combinator in January. Topship emphasizes an air-first model (arguing ocean freight is less viable across much of Africa) and aims to make shipping as easy as booking an Uber; it plans to use new capital to improve its asset-light technology and build proprietary global shipping infrastructure while preparing expansion into Ghana, Tanzania and Kenya, and has set aside $3,500 fashion and retail grants for Nigerian brands.
