XFuel develops a single-step Chemical Liquid Refining (CLR – CLEAR) process that converts waste hydrocarbon liquids into ultra-clean, drop-in transport fuels aimed at the shipping sector and other hard-to-abate industries. The company is building a modular production plant in Catalonia designed to process 16,000 tonnes of marine waste oils into 14,000 tonnes of low-carbon marine gas oil using waste-based feedstocks. XFuel says the waste-derived feedstocks and process will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of produced fuels. The Catalonia facility is intended as a flagship demonstration of commercial viability and infrastructure compatibility for drop-in low-carbon fuels. The company secured a €4.1 million competitive grant—the second-largest award under the programme—to support the project, which company leadership frames as validation of its technology and commercial credibility. The project also aims to contribute to local economic regeneration in communities facing nuclear plant closures.
