  • Les Nouvelles Fermes

    Participated · Equity · Apr 2021

Les Nouvelles Fermes operates closed-loop aquaponic greenhouses that pair trout farming with vegetable cultivation, using seven times less water and emitting roughly half the CO₂ of traditional farms. The company already runs a 1,000 m² pilot in Lormont (opened 2019) and a 5,000 m² facility called “Odette” in Mérignac (opened 2022). It is now developing a two-hectare site on reclaimed land in Carrières-sous-Poissy—set to be Europe’s largest aquaponics farm—scheduled to open in spring 2026. That farm is projected to yield up to 250 tons of produce and 60 tons of rainbow trout annually, supplying supermarkets (70 %), food-service (15 %), and direct sales (15 %) within 50 km of the site. Yields run 2.5-to-12× higher than open-field methods; tomatoes, for example, reach 10 kg per plant per season. The facilities combine low-tech elements (no heating or artificial lighting) with high-tech systems such as 52 connected sensors, in-house ERP, and robotics for crop treatments. Management plans to replicate the model at 15 sites across France and Europe by 2030, positioning the firm among a handful of advanced aquaponics players worldwide. The recent €5 million Series A round strengthens its balance sheet as it scales this third-generation farm design.
