Overview

"Sustainability" and "positive impact" are two macro-trends comparable to recent digital technology revolutions. The new formula for success is "a good company + positive impact > a good company." Consumers, corporations, public/private markets, and regulations overwhelmingly favor companies focusing on sustainability and positive impact. At Altalurra Ventures, we are not "just another impact fund." We are data-driven catalysts, investors, and operators, focusing on seed and series A investments across North America and, opportunistically, Europe. Our LPs value how we cut through the ESG nonsense by avoiding the many falsehoods and abuses of the concepts and improving expected returns by simultaneously generating a quantifiable positive impact. Altalurra timely fills an existing gap in private markets with a systematic impact-driven investing process. Founders are empowered to build sustainable businesses for more significant overall value creation.

  • 50inTech

    Participated · Seed · Oct 2023

50inTech builds software-as-a-service tools to measure and improve DE&I within tech companies, starting with a GenderScore that asks HR managers to fill 54 data points to produce a 0–100 score. To date 163 companies have used the GenderScore, which averages 61/100 and includes firms such as PayFit, Believe, AXA IT and EY Technology Consulting that score above 75. The company also operates GenderHire, an inclusive sourcing platform based on LinkedIn data of 30,000 women that can connect to ATS systems to surface gender-balanced candidate pools. 50inTech reports sector metrics from its users — for example 23% women on boards and 24.5% women in tech roles — and has identified retention and lack of turnover tracking for female employees (72% do not track it) as key issues. Companies that retake the GenderScore after a year typically see about a 6% improvement. The startup plans to integrate with HRIS for automatic scoring and to expand beyond gender toward a broader InclusionScore. The company recently raised a $1.6M (€1.5M) seed round.

    Led · Equity · Oct 2022

Impak Ratings provides impact analysis and ratings that measure how companies mitigate negative impacts and generate positive outcomes using the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The firm assesses both ESG risks to a company’s business model and the company’s impact on the environment and society. Launched in 2019 and based in Montreal and Paris, impak positions itself as a provider of standardized impact ratings for finance and industry. It has formed a strategic partnership with Societe Generale to supply impact analysis for the bank’s major corporate clients and to integrate its ratings into the bank’s standard business processes. Altalurra is working with impak to co-develop an impact assessment rating for institutional investors, indicating product development aimed at institutional use. Financially, the company recently completed a €4.5 million funding round led by Societe Generale alongside Altalurra Ventures. Impak Finance operates a social impact platform and consumer app that helps users find businesses with positive social and environmental impact and rewards purchases with Impak Coin, a cryptocurrency used within its ecosystem. In August 2017 the company launched a fully-compliant ICO to fund Impak Coin, which it described as a Canadian first. The company has now raised $1.1 million from angel investors. Participants named in the round include Anges Québec, Anges Québec Capital and private investors from Canada and France. Several high-profile figures have joined its board, including Claude Chagnon (Fondation Chagnon), Didier Kuhn (BlaBlaCar), Michel Lozeau and former Quebec cabinet minister Daniel Paillé. CEO Paul Allard said the support reflects enthusiasm for channeling capital toward enterprises that prioritize the welfare of people and the environment.
