  • Wonolo

    Participated · Series C · Nov 2018

Wonolo, founded in 2014 by CEO Yong Kim and based in San Francisco, operates a mobile-first online platform that connects businesses with temporary frontline workers. To date, over 1 million workers—called “Wonoloers”—have used its mobile app to pick up jobs and have earned hundreds of millions of dollars. Customers include Uniqlo, Aramark, Peloton and Driveline Retail. The company raised $138M in growth funding to accelerate its expansion and product roadmap. Wonolo plans to use the proceeds to speed continued growth, invest in mobile-first tech innovations, and expand in markets across the United States. It intends to deepen market share in top cities including Newark, Dallas, Atlanta, New York City, Chicago, Phoenix, Nashville, Tampa, San Antonio, Miami, Columbus, Austin, Houston, Raleigh, Indianapolis, Denver, Seattle, Salt Lake City, and Philadelphia. Wonolo operates a marketplace that connects hourly and blue-collar workers with businesses that need temporary staff in sectors like retail, manufacturing and shipping. Employers can post jobs in seconds and Wonolo reports jobs are often filled in minutes; payment is processed after a job is complete and workers are vetted before onboarding. The platform says it has 300,000 registered users and serves customers including Coca-Cola, Papa John’s and Uniqlo. Wonolo was founded in 2014 and positions itself as an alternative to traditional staffing agencies and newer on-demand platforms. The company plans to use its latest funding to expand its staff and continue growing its business and enterprise relationships. Financially, Wonolo has now raised $60 million in total and recently closed a $32 million Series C to support that expansion. Wonolo is an on-demand staffing marketplace that places underemployed hourly workers with unfilled work shifts at businesses in retail, manufacturing, shipping and logistics, ecommerce and other industries. Led by Yong Kim, CEO and co-founder, the San Francisco-based platform has been used by tens of thousands of hourly workers to find work when they need it. The company partners with thousands of companies, including Coca-Cola, Papa Johns and Uniqlo, to fill open shifts. Wonolo closed a $13M Series B that brought its total venture funding to $25M. The company plans to use the new capital to scale operations, launch in new local U.S. markets, add strategic partners and sign up more companies to the marketplace. Wonolo operates a platform that helps people find short-term, local work on demand and enables companies to fill immediate staffing needs. The company entered the San Francisco Bay Area market in December 2013 after support from The Coca‑Cola Company’s Innovation Accelerator program. Wonolo raised $2.2 million at a $7.5 million valuation, giving it initial capital to expand its market presence. Coca‑Cola provided a $1.0 million convertible note and an additional $700,000 note that will convert on the next round. The funding round was led by PivotNorth Capital and included CrunchFund, Foundry Group, and angel investors. The company’s stated vision is for people to find work whenever, wherever and for whomever they want, and for companies to fill immediate needs quickly.

  • PipelineRx

    Participated · Equity · Jul 2015

PipelineRx is a San Francisco-based medication management services and platform company focused on clinical telepharmacy. Led by CEO Brian Roberts, the company provides technology-enabled telepharmacy solutions to acute and specialty hospitals. Its offering combines an integrated, private, cloud-based technology platform, an optimized distributed telepharmacist network and a team of hospital-trained, licensed clinical telepharmacists. PipelineRx currently services over 200 hospitals. The company raised $9.1M in funding and will use the investment to strengthen its technology offerings. PipelineRX develops telepharmacy services that let pharmacists remotely verify and fill hospital prescriptions, addressing pharmacist shortages in rural areas. The company routes pharmacists in locations such as San Francisco to provide coverage for distant hospitals, an approach inspired by teleradiology. It is aiming to carve a niche in rural healthcare to reduce medication errors and staff burnout where on-site pharmacy coverage is limited. PipelineRX plans to build an analytics platform to capture geographic prescription patterns, interventions, safety measures, and dosage data. Financially, the company was founded in 2010 and is based in San Francisco; the California Healthcare Foundation—an initial investor in 2012—has provided another (undisclosed) investment, and last year PipelineRX raised $5 million from AMN Healthcare Services. Pipeline RX provides telepharmacy services and a configurable SaaS telepharmacy platform that lets remote pharmacists monitor and verify inpatient prescriptions over a HIPAA-compliant network. The company combines a staffing/outsourcing model with telemedicine technology to cover labor shortages, reduce onsite headcount, and offer variable-cost staffing to hospitals. Pipeline RX targets rural and public hospitals initially and has expanded interest from larger health systems; it is beginning to offer a customizable SaaS approach for bigger systems. The company says its average medication turnaround time is seven minutes versus an industry standard of 20 minutes and reports labor-cost savings ranging from 30–70% depending on the hospital. Pipeline RX currently has about 150 employees (roughly 120 telepharmacists), operates in 27 states, has had its pharmacists used by more than 200 hospitals, and more than 30 hospitals have adopted its SaaS product. Leadership plans include building an analytics platform to capture prescribing and intervention data as a third phase of the business.
