Carbeau is the spun-out electrochemical platform formerly known as Volta Technology within Avantium, focused on converting CO₂ using electricity into chemical building blocks and materials. The company’s platform uses electrons, preferably from renewable electricity, to transform CO₂ from a waste emission into feedstock for products designed to have limited to negative carbon emissions. Initial product targets include glycolic acid for the personal care market and PLGA (polylactic-co-glycolic acid), a compostable plastic with strong barrier properties and marine degradability. Carbeau is headquartered at Amsterdam Science Park and is planning a pilot plant in Delfzijl to support scale-up in a region with strong CCU and industrial infrastructure. The company is led by a management team with experience in technology development, scale-up and commercialization and entered the market with €35.2 million of backing from strategic and financial partners to accelerate commercialization.
