- Blue Mesa Health
Participated · Seed · Jun 2017
Blue Mesa Health offers a year-long, CDC-based digital diabetes prevention program that pairs dedicated health coaches with wireless scales and FitBit devices to drive behavior change. The company partners with doctors and risk-bearers (self-insured employers, health plans, ACOs, and hospital systems) and operates on a pay-for-performance model where it is paid when participants engage and lose weight. Blue Mesa runs three tailored programs—Transform (mobile cohort-based), Transformemos (Spanish-language), and Transform-By-Mail (low-tech phone/mail delivery)—to reach users across languages and technology levels. The team reports strong outcomes: 78% of participants reach 5.2% body weight loss at six months. In the near term they expect to help over 2,500 people reduce diabetes risk and plan to expand the program to 5,000 more participants and to additional countries. The company is fundraising to support that growth and anticipates pursuing a Series A within the year.
- MedPilot
Led · Seed · Apr 2016

It supplies tools for healthcare providers’ billing departments and revenue cycle management companies to track patients, manage experience, and monitor financial activity. The company says it will use new funding to fuel its next stage of growth and continue modernizing the patient billing experience. MedPilot provides a patient financial engagement platform used by outpatient facilities, hospitals, revenue cycle management companies, and practice management systems. The platform combines millions of data points from clients' practice management systems with internally derived insights and analytics to personalize communication method, content, and payment options. The company is led by co-founder and CEO Jacob Myers and COO Nathan Spoden and is based in Cleveland, Ohio. MedPilot graduated in the latest class of the Cedars-Sinai Accelerator. It completed a $1.7M seed funding round to bolster the team and launch new functionality to further engage patients throughout their lifecycle. MedPilot provides a performance-analytics platform that gives healthcare providers insight into the most effective billing and collections outreach by tracking sent rate, open rate, click rate, and response time. The software uses patient demographics, payment history and behavioral-economics data to craft tailored payment-resolution strategies and optimize outreach content. It integrates with providers’ internal billing and collections teams and also collaborates with third-party collectors such as Retrieval Masters Creditors Bureau. The company says it will use new funding to invest in technology, sales and marketing, and to support operational costs. Co-founder Matthew Buder Shapiro has a background in digital marketing and emphasized allocating manual touch where needed and digital approaches where effective. MedPilot participated in Blueprint Health’s accelerator and is based in New York. The company raised $750,000 in a Seed round to support these plans.

- Symcat
Led · Equity · Aug 2012
Symcat is an online symptom-based, computer-assisted triage tool that asks users about symptoms, age, gender and medical history, then compares inputs to CDC biosurveillance data and AHRQ guidelines to produce probable diagnoses and care recommendations. The product emphasizes concise, actionable guidance rather than encyclopedic content. Founders Craig Monsen and David Do (joined by Tolu Babalola) began conceptualizing the project in June 2011 and released a first prototype in November 2011; the team works out of the Butchers Hill neighborhood. Monsen and Do paused medical school to focus full-time on Symcat for a period and plan to continue developing the product while finishing their residency training. Symcat has participated in the Blueprint Health accelerator and has received grant support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Financially, known funding includes accelerator seed funding and a foundation award, which the team says helped with mentorship and product feedback.
