Overview

Enterprise Partners was founded in 1985 and is one of the few venture firms that have consistently focused on investing in Southern California businesses. To date, they have helped build over 150 companies and they are currently investing their sixth fund. They are pleased to say that they have put over $1.1 billion to work for those companies. Their partners are entrepreneurs themselves, having formed, run and sold multiple companies across a spectrum of industries. Their professional staff brings financial, legal, product development, marketing and operations support to the firm and the partners at Enterprise draw on their experience when working with their portfolio companies. Entrepreneurs often ask them what they look for in a company. Typically, they look at large emerging markets and markets undergoing fundamental changes along with the companies that they believe will become leaders in these markets and they look for talented people with innovative business models that can create or transform these large markets. They are open-minded regarding the specific types of businesses they fund but they are currently looking most actively at businesses in the life sciences.

Its lead investigational product candidate is MYDICAR, being developed for the treatment of advanced heart failure. The company recently held an approximately $10M second close of its recently announced funding to support its programs. Celladon intends to use the new capital to advance MYDICAR and to strengthen its activities in Europe. To that end, the company will establish a subsidiary in The Netherlands. Celladon is led by President and CEO Krisztina Zsebo, Ph.D., and added two board members alongside the financing. Celladon is a developer of treatments for cardiovascular diseases based in La Jolla, California. Its lead investigational product, MYDICAR, is a gene therapy program that uses a recombinant adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector to restore production of an enzyme that regulates calcium cycling and contractility in heart muscle cells. The program is designed to treat congestive heart failure and was granted Fast Track Status by the FDA in December 2011. The company plans to advance the clinical development of MYDICAR during the current year. To support those plans Celladon closed a $43M financing led by Pfizer Venture Investments with participation from multiple venture and corporate investors. The financing also resulted in new investor representatives joining the company's board.

  • Complete Genomics

    Participated · Series E · Aug 2010

Complete Genomics is a Mountain View, CA-based life sciences company that has developed and commercialized an innovative DNA sequencing platform. Its platform combines the company’s proprietary human genome sequencing technology with advanced informatics and data management software. The company offers the platform as an end-to-end, outsourced service that provides customers with data immediately ready to be used for genome-based research. Financially, Complete Genomics raised $39M in a Series E funding round. The Series E was led by new investor Sands Capital with participation from Essex Woodlands, OVP Venture Partners, Prospect Venture Partners, OrbiMed Advisors, Highland Capital Management and Enterprise Partners. Complete Genomics offers accelerated, lower-cost whole-genome sequencing, saying it can sequence an individual’s genome in only a few days for about $5,000. The company plans to use the new funding to build a large-scale sequencing facility slated to open by the beginning of 2010. At that center it aims to sequence 10,000 human genomes in the following year. Complete Genomics will initially sell to pharmaceutical companies, laboratories and other commercial customers rather than targeting the consumer market. If it achieves the lower price point—down from typical costs of $100,000–$350,000—it could compete with firms such as 23andMe, Navigenics and deCODE. Financially, the company raised $45 million in this fourth round and has $90 million in total funding to date.
