Decoy Smart Control is a Ribeirão Preto, São Paulo-based startup that has developed a liquid, fungi-based biocontrol sprayed onto cattle and fields to kill ticks. Its product uses two species of fungi whose spores attach to ticks, kill them, and propagate to find other ticks. The co-founders, Lucas von Zuben and Túlio Nunes, have postdoctoral backgrounds in chemical biology and began developing the approach while at university. The product has been tested on over 100,000 animals across 800 properties, and the company has been monetizing via research agreements with farmers while awaiting regulatory approval. Decoy aims to launch its cattle tick treatment next year pending Brazilian regulatory clearance and is developing additional lines for dog ticks, fleas (pet products), and poultry. The company is also eyeing other tropical cattle markets such as Australia and India for future expansion.
