  • Sentea

    Participated · Equity · Mar 2022

Sentea develops silicon photonics-based fiber Bragg grating (FBG) read-out systems (interrogators) designed to offer high performance with unprecedented cost-effectiveness. Its photonic integrated technology aims to enable large-scale deployment of fiber optic sensing across civil engineering, oil & gas, renewable energy, industrial and medical markets. The interrogators provide high-speed, robust measurements, edge computing capabilities and seamless integration with existing fiber networks, supporting structural health monitoring and smart-city/grid use cases. The company was incorporated in 2018 as a spin-off of the Photonics Research Group of Ghent University and imec. Sentea is privately held by a consortium including Fidimec, Finindus, PMV and Qbic II. It plans to scale up production capacity for its FBG interrogators and continue investing in next-generation fiber optic sensing products and IoT developments.

  • MICLEDI Microdisplays

    Participated · Seed · Jan 2020

Micledi Microdisplays develops MicroLED display modules aimed at augmented reality (AR) applications. The company validated a unique 300mm wafer manufacturing methodology and has demonstrated blue and green GaN-based MicroLED arrays with pixel-by-pixel microlenses. Micledi is a 2019 spinout from imec and is based in Leuven, Belgium. It plans to use the new funding to expand its team, design an active backplane ASIC, and build a fully functional MicroLED display module for AR glasses. The company has agreed to transfer its MicroLED manufacturing flow into GlobalFoundries’ CMOS fab and to design backplane ASICs in GF’s advanced CMOS process nodes. Micledi expects full-color modules with an active backplane to be available in 2024 and to introduce its first demo glasses in the first half of the second quarter. MICLEDI Microdisplays is a fabless developer spun out of imec in 2019 that builds microLED display technology for Augmented Reality headsets. Its technology combines III/V materials processing, 3D integration and 300mm silicon‑based processing with a proprietary ASIC to produce compact, high‑image‑quality, power‑efficient monolithic AR displays. The company is working with imec for process technology and prototyping prior to transfer to an industrial foundry partner for mass production. Recent plans funded by the round include demonstration of native RGB microLED displays using a reconstitution approach on 300mm wafers, preparation of technology IP for foundry transfer, and the launch of product development including system‑level ASIC work and qualification/testing. MICLEDI also intends to extend supply‑chain engagements and strengthen its product development team. The company raised EUR 7M in the announced capital round to accelerate commercialisation and transition from pilot‑line development to product design and manufacturing. MICLEDI Microdisplays is developing ultra-small, ultra-bright microLED displays aimed at next-generation AR glasses. The startup uses imec’s new integration technology for microLED on 300mm wafers to build what it calls the world’s smallest and brightest displays. MICLEDI claims its displays are about 100 times brighter than current commercial alternatives. The company’s mission is to make AR suitable for everyday personal use by enabling smart glasses that are small, lightweight, have long battery life, and a reasonable price. Founders Dr. Soeren Steudel and Dr. Alexander Mityashin are researchers from imec, and Sean Lord joined as CEO. The recently announced €4.5 million seed funding will be used to advance development of its microLED display technology.

  • Trinean

    Led · Equity · Apr 2012

Trinean offers a platform that combines highly accurate spectrophotometry instruments, state-of-the-art analytical software, proprietary disposables for standardized micro-volume sample analysis, and flexible lab-automation tools. The company was founded in 2006 as a spin-out of the University of Ghent and is based in Gentbrugge, Belgium. Trinean secured €2.7m of growth financing to support its operations. The funding is intended to accelerate development of its analytical platform and to expand sales, marketing, and distribution channels. Management changes accompanied the raise: Philippe Stas was appointed CEO, succeeding Dr. Marc Zabeau, who remains on the board. No revenue or user metrics were disclosed in the article.
