  • CloudPassage

    Participated · Series C · Feb 2014

CloudPassage is a San Francisco, CA-based provider of a security automation platform for the cloud. It created Halo, a security automation platform purpose-built for the cloud that delivers security and compliance for large-scale, distributed environments. Halo integrates with cloud and security technologies such as VMware, Rackspace, Amazon Web Services, RightScale, Splunk and HP ArcSight. The company currently protects more than 400 production cloud application deployments, including some Fortune 1000 enterprises. CloudPassage closed a $25.5M Series C that brought total capital raised to $53M and plans to use the funds to expand sales and marketing. The company is led by CEO Carson Sweet. CloudPassage develops cloud server security and compliance software specifically built for elastic, dynamic cloud environments. Its core product, Halo, combines an ultra-lightweight guest VM software component with an elastic compute grid optimized for security operations and automates multiple server security functions. Halo is designed to provide security in public cloud hosting where consistent physical location, network control and perimeter security are not guaranteed and can be deployed in minutes. The company has launched a commercial product and reported 70% growth in client uptake for the first two months of 2012 versus the prior year; customers include Foursquare. CloudPassage has raised a total of $20.5M in funding and says it will use the new capital to expand market penetration of Halo. CEO and co-founder Carson Sweet describes the company as steadily growing, including uptake from Windows customers moving to the cloud. CloudPassage builds server security and compliance software specifically for elastic, dynamic cloud environments. Its product targets security in cloud hosting environments where consistent physical location, network control and perimeter security are not guaranteed. The platform includes high-accuracy server security configuration and vulnerability management plus centralized management of host-based firewalls. A key component is the Halo architecture, which automates multiple server security functions and enables deployment in public cloud environments. Halo combines an ultra-lightweight guest VM software component with an elastic compute grid optimized for security operations. The company only recently launched its software and is already being used by well-known clients such as Foursquare and other SaaS hosts with dynamic server needs. CloudPassage has raised capital to support its growth, most recently a $6.5 million Series A.

  • Kaiima

    Participated · Equity · Sep 2013

Kaiima develops a proprietary Enhanced Ploidy (EP™) technology that multiplies a plant’s genome without compromising its integrity to increase productivity. The company applies EP™ to key crops and energy crops, and has demonstrated the technology in wheat, maize, rapeseed and castor. Kaiima’s stated mission is to help feed and energize the world by introducing new varieties designed for sustainable agriculture with vastly improved yields. Management frames the technology as a yield-enhancement approach distinct from many GM technologies that protect against loss rather than increase yield. The company emphasizes opportunities in emerging markets and plans to leverage investor partnerships to accelerate advances in yield enhancement. Financially, Kaiima completed an equity financing of more than US$65 million.

  • SpaceCurve

    Participated · Equity · Feb 2012

SpaceCurve is a third-generation big data platform delivering real-time immersive intelligence and targeted at location-based services. Its architecture continuously processes, fuses and analyzes multiple layers of spatial, temporal, sensor network, social media and other large sets of streaming data to provide immediate insights. The platform is designed for round-trip real-time capture and analysis of multidimensional, machine-scale streaming data that traditional big data offerings cannot handle. SpaceCurve aims to extend existing applications and enable new services across mobile, social media, financial trading, energy, communications, transportation, government and other markets. The company announced a $10M Series B to support commercial efforts and the first release of the SpaceCurve platform scheduled for Q3. Proceeds will be used to expand sales and marketing in support of that release. SpaceCurve develops a Big Data geospatial-temporal database and immersive analytics tools that create real-time models of reality. The platform continuously captures, processes and analyzes geospatial, temporal, sensor network, social graph and other large data streams to provide immersive location intelligence. The company says its technology overcomes limitations of relational, NoSQL and traditional databases by handling both scale and complexity. Target markets include mobile communications, location-based services, social applications, commodities, defense and emergency services. SpaceCurve announced it will use new funding to launch its first product offerings in early 2013. The company reported positive technical responses from major accounts and aims to rapidly commercialize its product to meet that demand. SpaceCurve develops a new spatial-temporal database and accompanying graph analysis tools to ingest and analyze large geospatial, geotemporal, sensor, and network data sets. The company positions its product to enable real-time actionable intelligence for location-based services, social applications, commodities, defense, and emergency services. SpaceCurve says its database addresses scale and complexity limitations found in relational, NoSQL, and other traditional databases. The company raised $2.7 million to fund the development of these big data solutions aimed at real-time location-based services. Seattle-based SpaceCurve has added technology industry veteran John Slitz as CEO to lead growth, set strategic direction, and build the management team. Founder and CTO Andrew Rogers remains part of the leadership alongside Slitz. SpaceCurve develops a massively parallel analytical database platform enabling join-oriented semantic, spatial, and relational applications. The company's core product is an analytical database optimized for massively parallel processing and complex joins across semantic, spatial and relational data. Founded in 2009 and based in Palo Alto, California, the company formed a Federal Government Advisory Board in December 2009. Per a regulatory filing, SpaceCurve raised $1.1M in venture capital. The regulatory filing is the source of the financing disclosure.
