  Daily Secret’s core product is a short, free email newsletter that provides city-specific tips and local recommendations delivered daily. The newsletter is ad-supported and the company reports 1.5 million subscribers across 20 countries. Leadership positions the inbox as a high-value channel for time-constrained, urban professionals and says other distribution channels may be added in the future. The company plans to launch newsletters in 15 new cities over the next year, including several fast-growing African markets. Daily Secret intends to use new funding to expand geographically and to build a more sustainable sales organization to monetize its concentrated audience. CEO Nikolaos Kakavoulis founded the product after moving back to Athens and translating his renewed appreciation of city life into the newsletter format.

  biNu is a mobile app platform that enables owners of feature phones and lower-end smartphones to use apps like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. The company has been adding social features such as following other users and photo sharing. It recently launched biNu credits, a rewards program where users earn credits by completing profiles, sharing content, or engaging with advertising; credits can be used to send SMS to non-biNu members and to download premium content. biNu closed a $4.3M Series A round (a partial $2M close was announced in August and the round expanded by $2.3M) to fund growth. Investors in the round include Tomorrow Ventures, Savannah Fund, David Risher, Paul Bassat, 500 Startups, PanAfrican Invesmetment Co., CVC Capital Partners’ Adrian McKenzie, Nicholas Gruen, and Lend Lease Ventures’ Anthony Pascoe. The company plans to use the new funding to continue expanding into emerging markets across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and Europe.
