The company was formerly known as Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. and changed its name to Panasonic Corporation in 2008. It was founded in 1918 and is headquartered in Kadoma, Japan.

Its platform has been adopted by major utilities and energy companies (including Tokyo Gas, Tokyo Electric Power Energy Partner, Hokkaido Electric Power, Hokuriku Electric Power, Osaka Gas, JERA, Tokyu Fudosan and others) across household DR and grid-scale battery control. Independent market research (Fuji Keizai) cited Shizen Connect as No.1 by corporate contract count in DR/VPP platforms and No.1 in AC/RA system corporate contract counts. The company aims to scale via capital-business alliances with 16 partners to become the de facto standard VPP platform. Shizen Connect was founded on October 2, 2023 and is headquartered in Tokyo; it plans to use newly raised funds to hire engineers and invest further in R&D.

The startup has raised about $192 million to date, including a $65 million Series B and a $29 million extended Series B. Financially, the company reported a 52% year-on-year increase in operating revenue to Rs 249 crore in FY25 and stated it has reached operating break-even and become EBITDA positive.

The latest round included participation from Spiral Capital and Panasonic's Kurashi Visionary Fund (Panasonic's CVC). Zene plans to expand partnerships, link Zene360 with specific health guidance programs, and develop a new integrated platform leveraging genomic information while strengthening information-management and customer-data privacy protections.
