ALT TEX develops a polyester-replacement fibre produced by fermenting food waste, positioning the material as an alternative to conventional polyester plastics. The company’s core product is a bioplastic fibre that can be turned into yarn and fabric for apparel. ALT TEX plans to scale up fibre production and convert those fibres into fabric, with the ambition of taking that fabric to clothing brands by mid-2022. The startup intends to use the new funding to grow its team (from three people toward six) and expand its production capabilities. Founders Myra Arshad and Avneet Ghotra pivoted from other natural-fibre R&D to focus on replacing polyester and have engaged academic partners in Ontario for research. ALT TEX participates in programs such as Creative Destruction Lab and NEXT 36 and has an advisory that includes Ruth Kelly, former director of raw materials at Lululemon.
