Brixton Biosciences is a clinical-stage life sciences company developing Neural Ice, an injectable, drug-free pain management technology intended to provide long-lasting relief from chronic and post-operative pain. The company is refining Neural Ice and intends to accelerate its clinical application, expanding development beyond its initial study focused on chronic knee pain. Neural Ice is positioned as a non-pharmacological alternative aimed at reducing reliance on opioids and addressing aspects of the opioid crisis. Brixton recently received first-year funding of a $2 million grant (R44AR084998) from the NIH HEAL Initiative to support its development work. The award is intended to enable further development and clinical advancement of Neural Ice across additional indications. Sameer Sabir, CEO and co-founder, characterized the grant as a significant step toward bringing safer, non-addictive pain options to a broad array of patients. Brixton Biosciences is a Cambridge, MA-based clinical-stage life sciences company spun out of Massachusetts General Brigham and led by CEO Sameer Sabir. Its lead therapeutic approach, Neural Ice™, is a single, safe, drug-free injectable designed to provide locally targeted, non-addictive, and comparatively long-lasting pain relief. The company plans to use new capital to initiate pivotal clinical studies in both chronic and acute pain indications. Specifically, Brixton will pursue two pivotal studies to treat knee pain associated with osteoarthritis and pain from knee replacement surgery. Management says the firm intends to expand the Neural Ice platform beyond the knee to multiple pain indications with an ultra-long acting injectable nerve block. The company recently added Dr. Michael Fishman as Chief Medical Officer and appointed Reggie Groves to its board to support clinical and commercial efforts.
