  • Spire Global

    Led · Equity · Feb 2024

Spire Global, Inc. provides space-based data, analytics and space services with proprietary datasets for monitoring the maritime domain. The company supplies datasets intended for precise maritime monitoring and broader space services. Spire has partnered with Signal Ocean to combine Spire’s datasets with Signal Ocean’s AI, machine learning and natural language processing capabilities. The collaboration aims to accelerate digitalization of the maritime economy while enhancing global security and transparency in the oceans. In connection with the partnership, Spire completed a private placement that generated $10 million in gross proceeds from Signal Ocean’s purchase of Class A common stock. Spire Global builds and operates a low earth orbit (LEO) multi-payload nanosatellite constellation that collects and analyzes a wide variety of signals. The company operates more than 100 satellites and 17 ground stations globally and manufactures nanosatellites in Glasgow, Scotland. Its core capabilities include RF signal detection and geolocation, with particular focus on L-Band SATCOM signals. Spire will demonstrate geolocation of RF signals emitted near the Earth’s surface and investigate additional geolocation techniques using its nanosatellites. The company targets government entities that require monitoring of RF activity for unauthorized use, interference, or manipulation. Company leaders frame the work as leveraging Spire’s signal-detection expertise to support defense and civil space activities. Spire Global sources hard-to-acquire Earth data via a multi-purpose satellite constellation and sells that data as subscription-based datasets and predictive solutions to commercial and government customers. The company enriches satellite-sourced data into geospatial analytics to help organizations improve operations, decrease environmental footprint, deploy resources for growth, and mitigate risk. Spire plans to accelerate the roll-out of intersatellite links to reduce data latency, a capability it says will be especially impactful for aviation customers. Financially, Spire signed a $70 million convertible term loan growth financing with Francisco Partners; the loan is subject to customary closing conditions, including payoff of existing debt, and includes a stock grant to Francisco Partners. Spire has announced plans to go public via a planned business combination with NavSight Holdings, Inc. The company maintains offices in San Francisco, Boulder, Washington DC, Glasgow, Luxembourg, and Singapore. Spire Global operates a proprietary nanosatellite constellation and global ground-station network to deliver near‑real‑time maritime, aviation and weather data and analytics. The company says it launched its 100th satellite and operates the world’s first commercial weather satellite constellation while owning the world’s second largest constellation of satellites and ground stations. Spire reports its constellation tripled global availability of precise atmospheric radio occultation measurements to improve weather prediction. Management said the business increasingly funds organic growth from revenue, and that the new capital will enable further international expansion—particularly across APAC—and enhanced extreme-weather prediction analytics. The investment will be used to increase production of Spire’s space-based data and proprietary analytics and to scale product, sales, and marketing worldwide. Spire also highlighted strategic partnerships with NASA, ESA and Amazon as part of its product and go‑to‑market strategy. Spire Global builds and sells space-based data and analytics services aimed at logistics, weather, and IoT markets. The company emphasizes a combination of next-generation space technology and software analytics. It is expanding its global footprint by opening a full-service European headquarters in Luxembourg. Spire says the new office and funding will increase access to global talent to support scaling. Recent hires include a new CFO, Bryan LeBlanc, and a Global Head of Talent, Campbell Fitch, to support growth. The company is pursuing growth through both talent recruitment and geographic expansion into the Luxembourg ecosystem.

  • Harbor Lab

    Participated · Seed · Dec 2022

Harbor Lab builds a platform to streamline port-call disbursements and port-call expenses, replacing spreadsheet-driven workflows across ports. The company says its product can reduce invoicing errors and overpayments from roughly 20% to about 3% per port call. Port-call costs are a major line item for vessels—about $2.2M per vessel per year—and the global cost from port calls exceeds $220 billion annually, which frames Harbor Lab's market opportunity. Founder Antonis Malaxianakis was an early user who manually reviewed over 20,000 disbursement accounts, and the team focused engineering resources against a strict roadmap after seed funding. Harbor Lab already counts Great Eastern Shipping, Oldendorff, Veson Nautical, and 90POE among its clients and partners. The company is emphasizing stronger KYC on counterparties (it sanctioned about 100 participants overnight amid geopolitical events) and sees new environmental rules and geopolitical crises increasing urgency for its product. Harbor Lab, launched in March 2020 in Athens, Greece, provides a SaaS disbursement-account analysis platform for the maritime industry. Its software collects official port tariffs from port authorities and uses an internally developed algorithm to calculate and evaluate port expenses in real time. The platform claims to reduce port call expenses by approximately 6% per port call and to cut administration costs by up to 75%. Harbor Lab secured €6.1 million in funding to further develop the product. The company operates in the estimated $200 billion annual maritime disbursements market. Management has said it plans global expansion into major maritime hubs such as Copenhagen and Singapore and to develop the product further with machine learning capabilities.
