Fermentalg develops technology to breed microalgae for industrial production of molecules used in consumer and industrial products. The company’s platform targets markets including food and animal feed, specialty chemicals, health, cosmetics and biofuels. It created Prolealg, a joint venture with Sofiproteol in 2011, to produce Omega‑3 from microalgae at scale. Fermentalg plans to scale up production of molecules of interest to industrial volumes and address large, fast‑growing markets. The company is based in Libourne, France and was founded in 2009. It completed a third funding round in 2013 to support its industrial roll‑out. Fermentalg is a Libourne, France-based biotech start up focused on developing and producing microalgae for the agrifood, healthcare and energy markets. Founded by president Pierre Calleja, the company specializes in producing micro-algae by transforming waste products into sugar that serves as energy without requiring light. Its core output is strains of microalgae produced via that process. Fermentalg raised €5.3m in its second round of funding. The company intends to use the funds to increase its research capabilities and accelerate the industrialization of its microalgae strains.
