Save da Sea develops plant-based seafood products that mimic the flavor and texture of fish and shellfish, including a smoked salmon alternative made from carrots and a tuna salad made from jackfruit. The company reports retail traction: its products are available in 500 Canadian stores, including Fortinos, Healthy Planet, Save-On Foods, Sobeys, and Whole Foods, and it recently launched in the U.S. at Market of Choice. Year-over-year the startup reported a 63% increase in retailers and a 64% increase in points of distribution; its products are available in 27 stores across the Pacific Northwest. Founder and CEO Aki Kaltenbach started the company in 2019 after transitioning to a plant-based diet and brings experience running restaurants and working at Hootsuite. With the new financing, Save da Sea plans to accelerate expansion in the United States and grow its Victoria-based team. The company is a member of YSpace’s Food & Beverage Accelerator and the Future Ocean Foods association.
