Founded in 2019 after completing the HighTechXL venture building programme, inPhocal develops an optical laser technology that turns a standard laser beam into a concentric beam with a central spot. The beam properties enable longer focal depths and focal lengths, allowing faster print rates, wider print areas and marking on curved surfaces at rapid speed. Target applications include replacing ink-jet stamping of expiry dates and QR codes on bottles, cans and fresh produce to reduce waste, and creating laser branding for the produce industry. The technology can also be focused to smaller spot sizes for wafer dicing, which the company says can increase chip yield. inPhocal plans to use recent funding to increase production of its machines (manufactured in Breda) and to install units in customer manufacturing lines worldwide. The company positions its product as a sustainable alternative to polluting ink technology and as a way to enable laser applications that were previously not possible.
