Overview
Founded in 2016 and based in Gurugram, Intello Labs deploys image-recognition tools for quality assessment of fruits and vegetables and builds automated weighing and packing machines for fresh produce. The company offers end-to-end automation in fresh-produce supply chain management, aiming to reduce manual grading and improve consistency. The latest filings show the business raised funds to meet immediate working capital needs and support longer-term growth initiatives. Intello has raised nearly $16 million to date, including a $5 million round in September 2021. After the recent Series B allotment, promoters’ collective stake was diluted to 17.7%, and several investor stakes were adjusted per the filings. Intello Labs, founded in 2016, develops image-recognition tools for quality assessment of fruits and vegetables and produces automated weighing and packing machines for fresh produce. The company also supplies proprietary hardware, algorithms and software to support quality analysis across produce. According to regulatory filings, it has authorized the allotment of 7,706 Series A3 preference shares and 15 equity shares priced at Rs 47,247 per share. The firm passed a special resolution to expand into trade, assembly, packing, purchase, leasing and renting of hardware and machines for packing and sorting of commodities using AI, in India and abroad. Financially, the company’s latest round values it at about Rs 246 crore (close to $34 million) and reduced co-founders’ combined stake to 18.44% after the financing. Prior to this transaction, Intello Labs raised $5.9 million in a Series A in May of the prior year led by Saama Capital. Intello Labs is a Gurugram-based startup, founded in 2016, that uses artificial intelligence, computer vision and deep learning to assess the quality of fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. Its product suite spans software, hardware and services, including Intello Track (a mobile app that grades produce from smartphone images), Intello Sort (a compact multi-commodity sorting line), Intello Pack for packers, and Intello Deep, a handheld near-infrared spectroscopy scanner that measures brix, pH, total suspended solids, dry matter, moisture and pesticide residues. The company sells to growers, packers, processors, exporters, foodservice providers and retailers and counts customers such as Dole, Ocean Spray and Reliance Fresh, as well as several Chinese and Southeast Asian e-grocery platforms. Demand has increased recently from e-grocers and packaged-food processors, creating the need to adapt products to diverse local supply chains and specifications. Key challenges include meeting differing regional quality expectations and customizing solutions for varied customer requirements. Intello plans to enhance automation across its products and use the Series A funding to push international expansion, particularly into the US and across the Asia-Pacific region. Intello Labs develops computer-vision and deep-learning technology to assess crop quality, typically usable on a mobile phone. Its models analyze visual defects and attributes for wheat, potato, onion, tomato and spices, detecting insect damage in wheat and measuring cardamom pod diameter to 0.08mm. The system samples 1–2kg per 500kg lot—around 100x larger than prior ~10g checks—improving grading accuracy and potentially increasing farmer payouts by 5–30%. Intello Labs has partnerships with two retailers that share data to help train its models and reduce food waste. The team includes data scientists, imagery experts and tech veterans with experience at Amazon, Yahoo and Canon. The company plans to expand beyond visible wavelengths into near-infrared to assess additional quality attributes such as protein content.
