Overview
Planet FWD builds a carbon-management platform and an emissions-reduction engine that helps consumer brands model GHG Protocol Scope 3 emissions across supply chains and design lower-emission products. The company expanded its capabilities after acquiring CleanMetrics in 2021 and has assembled what it describes as the largest life-cycle analysis database for agricultural production systems in North America. Planet FWD serves about 25 customers, including Kashi, Pangaia, Just Salad, Numi Organic Tea, Healthy Hippo, Toodaloo and Sweet Loren’s. The startup hired a climate science team to expand its data and modeling and is focused on adding more predictive emissions-reduction features to its product. Time-sensitive regulatory and consumer pressures are cited as drivers of demand for its solution. Financially, the company recently raised a $10M Series A and has raised $16.8M to date. Planet FWD launched Moonshot Snacks, a carbon-neutral, organic, kosher, plant-based, non-GMO and no-sugar-added cracker available in sourdough sea salt, rosemary garlic and tomato basil, priced at $5.99 per box. Moonshot Snacks begins shipping via the company's website, will be available December 16 at plastic-free grocer Zero, and has a broader retail launch planned next year. The company sources ingredients from farmers using regenerative agriculture practices and aims to use consumer demand to encourage more farms to adopt those techniques. Planet FWD is alpha testing a carbon impact assessment tool that breaks down greenhouse-gas impact across packaging, ingredients and distribution and recommends ways to reduce emissions. The startup plans additional products such as cookies and chips, with a roadmap driven by supply-chain opportunities to convert farms to regenerative practices. Financially, Planet FWD announced an additional $2.5 million in funding led by Emerson Collective, Concrete Rose, MCJ Collective and Arlan Hamilton, on top of $2.7 million announced earlier this year, bringing announced funding to $5.2 million; investors also include BBG Ventures, January Ventures and Kapor Capital. Planet FWD builds a climate-friendly food platform and snack brand focused on ingredients sourced from regenerative agriculture. The company has assembled an exhaustive library of farms practicing regenerative techniques and is building software to codify and map that information. Its software is powering the startup’s food production pipeline. Planet FWD’s first product is a cracker scheduled to launch later this year, with chips planned next. The company’s mission is to demonstrate consumer demand for climate-friendly products and to encourage more farmers to adopt regenerative practices. Planet FWD recently closed seed funding to support these efforts.
