Headquartered in Liège, Belgium, SamanTree Medical is a privately held med-tech firm focused on improving oncologic surgery through its Histolog® Scanner, the first device to use massively parallel confocal microscopy for intra-operative imaging. The system captures nearly 30,000 images simultaneously, generating histology-like views in about one minute without damaging the specimen. To date, the technology has been used on more than 6,000 patients and has demonstrated a 67 % reduction in re-operation rates for breast-conserving surgery, while offering sensitivity of 73 %–91 % and specificity of 91 %–100 % compared with conventional pathology. In prostatectomies, Histolog images can be obtained in 5–20 minutes versus 45–60 minutes for frozen-section analysis, enabling more nerve-sparing procedures. The company plans to accelerate R&D, further develop the scanner, and scale commercialization across Europe and the United States. Its growth strategy is now supported by a €20 million venture-debt facility from the European Investment Bank (EIB), bolstering its financial resources for expansion.
