  • Calicat

    Participated · Series A · Oct 2024

California Catalysts (Calicat) develops advanced materials and stack components to lower the cost of hydrogen production, focusing on non-iridium electrocatalysts and porous transport layer coatings for PEM electrolysis cells. The company combines proprietary cascading AI models with high-throughput physical testing to accelerate electrocatalyst discovery and evaluation, achieving progress on a weekly cadence. Calicat was spun out of Caltech four years ago to commercialize $120M of DOE-funded JCAP research and has established partnerships with SoCal Gas, Tokyo Gas (via Acario), and DeNora. Leadership changed in January when early investor and board member Jourdan Urbach became CEO to speed translation of R&D into products. The company says its products immediately lower levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) by reducing OpEx and enabling greater CapEx amortization. Calicat is deploying recent funds toward productization of its non-iridium catalysts and coatings for electrolyzer OEMs, producers, and operators, and is based in Chatsworth, Calif. H2U develops catalysts to initiate and accelerate the electrolysis of water and produces a grid-scale PEM electrolyzer called the Gramme 50. Its technology is rooted in ten years of R&D funded by the U.S. Department of Energy through Caltech’s Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis. Led by CEO Mark McGough and based in Chatsworth, CA, the company is advancing commercial electrolyzer designs. H2U intends to use the new funding to advance its electrolyzer designs and to commission buildout of its proprietary Catalyst Discovery Engine (CDE). It has a strategic partnership with SoCalGas to pilot the Gramme 50 as SoCalGas plans to replace up to 25% of natural gas with clean hydrogen, a shift that could require 10–20 GW of electrolysis capacity.

  • Heila Technologies

    Led · Seed · Nov 2020

Heila Technologies develops the Heila EDGE® platform, a modular edge‑computing, control, optimization and machine‑learning system for operating distributed energy resources based on grid, economic, or sustainability constraints. The platform emphasizes automation, modularity and scalability to reduce system complexity and cost for microgrids and distributed energy projects. Heila was founded in 2015 and is based at Greentown Labs in Somerville, Massachusetts. The company announced a completed $3.0 million seed round that will support expansion of its distributed grid intelligence and partnerships for deployment. Tokyo Gas’s Acario Innovation made an equity investment that completed the round after earlier investments from Table Rock Infrastructure Partners, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and private investors. Heila plans joint development and deployment of microgrid projects with Tokyo Gas/Acario to accelerate international deployments, including in Japan.

  • Electriphi

    Participated · Seed · Feb 2020

Electriphi builds charging management and fleet-monitoring software for electric vehicle fleets, with a focus on managing charging and collecting operational data. The company has attracted interest from school districts and counts Twin Rivers Unified School District in Sacramento as a benchmark customer. Electriphi was founded by Muffi Ghadiali, a former senior director at ChargePoint who led hardware and software development for fast charging, alongside Sanjay Dayal, who previously worked at Agralogics, Tibco, Xamplify, Versata and Sybase. The startup positions itself against incumbents such as EVConnect, GreenLots, GreenFlux and AmplyPower. Electriphi is pursuing the large opportunity presented by the electrification of public and commercial fleets in the U.S. The company recently closed a seed financing to support its product and go-to-market efforts.
