  • Truecaller

    Participated · Series C · Oct 2014

Truecaller, founded in 2009 and based in Stockholm, offers mobile communication apps providing caller-ID, spam protection and other smartphone solutions. Its core product identifies callers, blocks spam and delivers related smartphone features to users. The company has raised more than €70 million to date from investors including Atomico, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Sequoia Capital and Open Ocean Capital. Zenith Venture Capital has invested 100 million Swedish Krona (just over €10 million) via a purchase of existing warrants and shares. The investment enables key employees to exercise warrants and become shareholders, which CEO Alan Mamedi said supports long-term sustainability. Zenith was founded last year by Tommy Jacobson and joins Truecaller's cap table through this transaction. Truecaller aggregates existing directory services and crowdsourced address-book data to help users find contacts and screen incoming calls. The platform indexes around 1.5 billion names and numbers and has shown rapid user growth, with reports of about 60 million monthly unique users and an updated figure of 85 million users. It offers spam-call filtering, integrations such as Twitter lookup, and has pursued acquisitions and advisors (including interest in MessageMe and involvement from MessageMe cofounder Arjun Sethi). Growth has been strongest outside the U.S., and past funding rounds have been used in part to expand its U.S. user base. Financially, Swedish filings show a net loss of roughly $2.3 million in 2013 and net sales of about $870,000. The company is based in Stockholm and also maintains operations in Silicon Valley. Truecaller is a mobile phone number verification directory that helps users identify incoming calls whether numbers are in their contacts or not. The app integrates third‑party data — including Yelp’s API — to verify business numbers, display Yelp ratings, and show whether Truecaller users have marked a number as spam. Truecaller has over 45 million users. The company has formed partnerships such as with Yelp and previously with Twitter in India to expand its directory and utility. Truecaller currently operates a freemium model but plans to move beyond freemium to promote businesses within the app. It recently raised a Series B to support expansion into the U.S. Truecaller provides a crowdsourced phone directory app and a free phone-number search on its website, available on Android, iPhone, BlackBerry, Symbian and Windows Phone. The service builds its directory from opt-in user-shared contacts and partnerships with white/yellow-pages companies. The company says it is experiencing exponential growth, which it leverages to improve coverage in markets lacking reliable directory services. Truecaller intends to use the new funding to expand its footprint in North America, Asia and the Middle East. The startup emphasizes user control, allowing users to opt in and unlist their numbers if they appear in the database. Truecaller was founded in 2009 and is based in Stockholm, Sweden.
