Sensengasse 1, Wien, 1090, Austria
Overview
The Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) is the national funding agency for industrial research and development in Austria. As a "one-stop shop" offering a diversified and targeted programme portfolio, the FFG gives Austrian businesses and research facilities quick and uncomplicated access to research funding. The FFG was founded on 1 September 2004 (pursuant to the FFG Act on establishing a research promotion agency, Federal Law Gazette I No. 73/2004). The FFG is wholly owned by the Republic of Austria, represented by the Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology (bmvit) and the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (BMWFW). As a provider of funding services, however, the FFG also works for other national and international institutions.

- Epitome Therapeutics
Participated · Grant · Jun 2026
Epitome Therapeutics is developing a proprietary epigenome editing platform called CADENCE that aims to enable precise, durable and calibrated activation of gene expression without changing DNA sequence. The platform uses a modular architecture built around a library of engineered epigenetic effectors intended to tailor gene activation to specific biological contexts. The company was founded in 2025 as a spin-off from EMBL and is focused on translating its science into development programmes and selecting a first drug candidate. Financially, Epitome closed a €4 million pre-seed financing (€2M equity plus €2M grants) to advance the platform and grow its team. The company plans to use the new capital to advance development programmes and expand its headcount as it progresses toward initial therapeutic milestones.
- Another Earth
Participated · Equity · Mar 2026
Another Earth develops a generative-AI and 3D-modeling platform that produces synthetic, fully labelled satellite imagery and geospatial datasets. By removing the need for costly real-world imagery and manual annotation, the system lets organisations train and test Earth observation algorithms more quickly and at lower cost. The technology is already being used with GeoTerra Image in Sub-Saharan Africa to track the environmental impact of mining and industrial operations, and the company has partnered with NovaTerra in Brazil to support deforestation monitoring, agricultural analysis, and climate-risk assessment. With its Synthetic Data Engine, Another Earth aims to move customers from reactive crisis response to proactive, predictive intervention across land, water, and infrastructure applications. The Vienna-based startup intends to deploy its platform across Latin America and Africa, concentrating on biodiversity monitoring, deforestation tracking, and broader environmental risk analysis. To date, it has secured €3.5 million in external funding to accelerate product deployment and international expansion.
- Synaps
Participated · Equity · Feb 2025
Synaps offers a browser-based, real-time collaborative design canvas that combines a prompt-driven workflow with a generative, vector-based floorplan drawing tool (Vecy AI) and a high-speed rendering engine for 2D, 3D, and video outputs. The company positions its product as accelerating drawing by a claimed factor of up to 50 and rendering 100–1,000 times faster than market alternatives based on internal testing. Synaps launched its beta in Tirana and, while still in beta, reported 60,000 users, 1,500 daily active users, and hundreds of paying customers. The team has grown rapidly from four to seventeen employees and opened a San Francisco office as part of US expansion plans. Version 1 is planned for summer 2026 with more than 20 additional AI tools across drafting and post-production, and management projects significant user growth and a seed round by the end of 2026.
- Syntropic
Led · Equity · Jul 2024
Founded in 2023 as a spin-off from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria, Syntropic is building a medical device that delivers targeted light therapy to stimulate the formation of neural connections associated with improved mood. The therapy is designed for at-home use and is accompanied by telemedical supervision. Early preclinical data reported by the company show marked improvements in drive, stress levels, and social withdrawal among participants. Syntropic initiated its first clinical trial (LUX-Trial) at the University of São Paulo in 2025 and soon after gained approval for a home-use study (NEON-Trial) with NYU Langone Health. The startup’s near-term priorities include advancing ongoing clinical development and preparing for U.S. FDA clearance as part of its planned market entry there. Financially, Syntropic disclosed a seven-figure funding round in July 2024 and has now added a mid-six-figure extension, bringing in fresh capital to fuel trials and regulatory work.
