  • Snack

    Participated · Safe · May 2021

Snack is a video-driven dating app that combines familiar dating matching algorithms with short-form video expression, described as "TikTok meets dating." The app enables users to share videos to match, communicate, and build connections, prioritizing authentic, mobile-first expression. Founder and CEO Kim Kaplan worked with Gen Z technologists during branding and product development. Snack is available on iOS in the U.S., Canada, UK, Australia and South America, with plans to launch on Android in 2021. The company is building a community-driven approach, including a Gen Z Syndicate to involve young investors, team members, and consultants in the product. Recent financings (a $2M US SAFE and a prior $3.5M pre-seed) underpin near-term growth plans. The new funding is intended to accelerate marketing and hiring to grow the business. Snack is a video-first dating app that asks users to create short videos and post them to a scrollable feed rather than relying on traditional swipe-based profiles. Users can like and comment on videos, and direct messages open once two users have liked each other's videos. The app is early-stage and currently lacks location filtering, but the team is building TikTok-like video editing features to enable more creative profiles. Snack has discussed monetization plans that mirror other dating apps, including premium subscriptions and potential advertising, though it is not yet monetized. Thus far the company has raised external funding to support growth and product development. The team is ten people and the startup reports that 60% of the team is diverse, with 40% of employees being visible minorities.

  • Heirlume

    Participated · Seed · Apr 2021

Heirlume offers a machine-powered trademark registration platform that uses AI and machine learning to surface conflicts across U.S. and Canadian government databases and improve application compliance. The product turns trademark search and filing into a self-serve, lower-cost process, with the company offering its core trademark search for free in early days. Heirlume charges just under CA$600 for the first registration and CA$200 for each additional filing, and provides a small-business friendly buy-now-pay-later option via Clearbanc. The platform aims to reduce human error and government backlogs by producing highly compliant applications and to make trademark ownership accessible to small businesses. Heirlume has a partnership with Google Domains to surface trademarkability signals in domain search results. The founders (Julie MacDonell, CTO Sarah Ruest and Dave McDonell) have intentionally built a cap table and team emphasizing underrepresented and female-identifying members.
