  Proteme is a France-based AgTech startup developing eco-friendly edible coatings to extend the shelf life of fresh produce. Its initial products target bananas and lemons and use a biodegradable, tasteless, odourless antimicrobial coating called Prosane that slows ripening and reduces storage diseases. The company positions its coatings as a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging and post-harvest phytosanitary products for farmers and cooperatives. The €605K raised in July 2023 will be used to finalise development of the first two products, hire experts, and support a move to its first premises in September 2023. Proteme plans a second seed fundraising round by the end of 2023 to scale production, complete regulatory procedures, and conduct experimental trials with industrial partners in the banana and lemon sectors. The startup aims to reduce food waste and related emissions by extending produce shelf life across the food chain.
