Overview

FI.R.A. is a major robotics competition with the goal of using sports as benchmark problems for state of the art research in robotics. FIRA also includes the FIRA Air competition for autonomous flying robots, FIRA Challenge for robotics research with great societal benefits such as urban search and rescue robots, and FIRA Youth for the next generation of researchers. In 2018, FIRA RoboWorld Cup was held in Tai Chung, Taiwan, and attracted more than 1,200 participants.

    Intertwine operates a storytelling social network built around a shared creativity approach, allowing writers, readers and talent to create, share and publish multimedia (text, audio, video, images) works. The company targets schools and universities that run co-learning and digital projects, as well as companies seeking to develop value and storytelling strategies. Led by founder and CEO Gianluca Manca, Intertwine is an Innovative Startup based at Digital Magics Napoli in Naples. The company plans to use the funds to increase product development, marketing and sales efforts, hire new people and expand its 15-person community. It is also planning geographic expansion, with new offices to open in Abruzzo. Intertwine is a web platform that enables users to create, share and publish multimedia products in a collaboration-oriented environment. The company is developing an entertainment product that blends features of traditional printed products with digital communication and social networks, centered on a “plotter” who creates a plot and “brickers” who contribute multimedia bricks. After completion the plotter selects the most appropriate bricks to create an “intertbook,” which is distributed digitally and generates revenues for the plotter for each participating bricker and for the platform. The beta version is online and offers social capabilities such as comments, notifications, likes, sharing within the platform and to social networks, writing tools like notes, and multimedia preview. Intertwine is led by CEO Gianluca Manca with Salvatore Imparato, Gennaro Mangani and Stefano Imparato on the team and is based in Fisciano (Salerno), Italy. It recently raised €110k and intends to use the funds to accelerate growth and the production process.

    Foodscovery operates an online and mobile marketplace that enables small Made-in-Italy food producers to sell and deliver products within 24–48 hours. The platform’s catalog includes about 1,500 items from local bakeries, butcheries, cheese and pastry producers. Founded in 2014 and based in Pescara, Italy, the company was incubated within Digital Magics and currently has 12 employees; Axel Springer is also among its shareholders. Management includes founders Fabio Di Gioia and Mario Sorbo (who together own 41%). The company raised €800K to support product and market expansion and to strengthen its balance sheet through equity investments by strategic backers. Planned uses of proceeds include launching a new version of the website, increasing the number of producers on the platform, hiring a designer, a sales professional, an accountant/business analyst and SEM/SEO specialists, and beginning international expansion starting in the UK.

Its releases include Mangatar Saga and Dengen Chronicles, a customizable online card game in the Manga universe that combines TCG and RPG elements. The company is led by Andrea Postiglione (CEO & Web Designer), Raffaele Gaito (BizDev & Backend Developer), Enrico Rossomando (CTO & Frontend Developer), Michele Criscuolo (Mobile Developer) and Alfredo Postiglione (Manga Illustrator). Mangatar plans to grow as a publisher by leveraging independent developers, expanding its team and creating a network to develop indie casual and mid-core games for mobile and connected TV platforms. Following the investment, it opened a marketing and promotion office in FIRA Station, a coworking space in Pescara. The company raised €1.1M via Fi.R.A.'s StartHope and Invitalia's Smart&Start Italia, with Fi.R.A. joining as an investor alongside the co-founders and existing shareholder dPixel's Digital Investments S.C.A. SICAR. Mangatar develops a social, manga-universe massive multiplayer card game that lets players create unique "mangatars," take sides, join groups, accomplish missions and improve skills through social play. The team is led by students from the University of Salerno, including Raffaele Gaito, Andrea Postiglione, Enrico Rossomando, Michele Criscuolo and Alfredo Postiglione. The company showcased its game at TechCrunch Italy in September 2012. In November 2012 Mangatar won the €25k “Startup of the year” prize in the ICT & Social Innovation section of the National Prize of Innovation (PNI Cube). The prize check was presented during an event in Bari on November 30, 2012. The award represents the only disclosed financial support mentioned in the article.
