  • Battolyser Systems

    Participated · Series A · Sep 2024

Battolyser Systems develops and manufactures an integrated battery and electrolyser called the Battolyser that stores electricity and produces hydrogen from renewable power to balance demand. The Battolyser® technology can switch on and off following intermittent renewable energy, providing operational flexibility that can reduce grid congestion and enable new business models. The product is offered as a 2.5MW plug-and-play skid and 5MW modules integrated with Balance of Plant on site. The company plans to scale operations and bring a next-generation electrolyser to market in 2025 using the new funding. Battolyser is led by CEO Mattijs Slee and is based in Rotterdam. Financially, the company closed a €30M Series A and complements a €40M financing agreement with the European Investment Bank signed in October 2023. Battolyser Systems develops and manufactures 'Battolyser', an integrated system combining a battery and an electrolyser that stores excess electricity and produces hydrogen from renewable sources. The system uses surplus electricity to generate hydrogen via an integrated electrolyser, can feed surplus electricity back to the grid, and is claimed to produce hydrogen at lower cost than existing technologies due to electrolyser efficiency and battery flexibility. Invented by Prof. Dr. Fokko Mulder and his research group at TU Delft, the technology led to the company's formation in 2018 and the firm is Netherlands-based. Battolyser Systems has expanded to 75 employees with a target of 100 by the end of 2023 and says its technology is already used at a Dutch industrial gas power plant and set for commercial deployment in 2024. The company plans to scale up and commercialise its units through expansion of a production facility in Rotterdam, and expects the latest financing to create more than 150 new jobs in the region. Financial support to date includes investments from Koolen Industries in 2020, backing from Innovation Industries and Global Cleantech Capital, and a €2M subsidy from the European Commission's Just Transition Fund in September 2023.

  • Carbyon

    Participated · Series A · Sep 2024

Carbyon develops direct air capture (DAC) machines using a patented capturing technique designed to reduce the costs of DAC equipment and lower the cost-per-ton of CO2 captured. The company builds equipment to filter CO2 from ambient air for underground storage or conversion into alternatives to fossil-fuel-based products. It intends to use recent funding to develop engineering-scale demonstrators and begin commercial pilot testing. Carbyon's technology focuses on reducing per-ton capture costs through its proprietary process. The startup is preparing for growth as it moves from development toward demonstration and commercial pilots.
