Overview

Kapor Center for Social Impact pursues creative strategies that will leverage information technology for positive social impact. It primarily works with underrepresented communities, focusing on gap-closing endeavors and making the tech ecosystem and entrepreneurship more diverse, inclusive, and impactful. The company works to advance the body of knowledge about the pipeline by conducting, disseminating, and evangelizing action-oriented research that leads to more effective, evidence-based solutions. It addresses the problem by fixing all of the leaks along the pipeline for underrepresented populations, aligning strategies and efforts between three organizations—the Kapor Centre, SMASH, and Kapor Capital—to provide a comprehensive approach to expanding tech inclusion. • Kinnos

    Participated · Equity · May 2023

Kinnos's core product, Highlight, is a patented, hospital-grade color additive platform that temporarily colors disinfectant wipes and solutions to provide staff with an instantaneous visual cue to improve disinfection quality. Highlight is Star Registered by the Global Biorisk Advisory Council and recognized by the World Health Organization; a peer-reviewed study in the American Journal of Infection Prevention found it improved disinfection quality by as much as 70%. Highlight is already in use by hospitals, first responders, and transit agencies around the world and the company positions the product as a way to raise the standard of care for cleanliness and infection prevention. Kinnos was founded in 2015 during the Ebola outbreak and is headquartered in Brooklyn, NY. The company announced a $15 million financing to meet growing healthcare industry demand and to scale commercial deployment. It also named healthcare veteran Steve Fanning as CEO to lead rapid growth and commercialization. Kinnos is a New York–based startup that makes colorized disinfectant additives to ensure surfaces are covered. Its core products are Highlight powder, a patented additive dissolved into bulk bleach that colors solutions blue and fades after a few minutes, and Highlight wipes, which impregnate wipes at point of use. The company primarily targets hospitals and healthcare settings and has sold to humanitarian organizations deployed to Liberia, Guinea, Haiti, DR Congo and Uganda, with recent shipments to China amid the coronavirus outbreak. Kinnos is a five-person company founded six years ago and conducts third‑party testing to ensure its additive does not reduce disinfectant potency. The additive lasts about five hours in a bucket of bleach and fades on surfaces in about three minutes. After establishing a foothold in hospitals, the company is considering a consumer offering. Kinnos developed Highlight, a patent-pending additive for disinfectants designed to improve visibility, coverage, and end-user compliance. The product was created in response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa and has been field-tested in Liberia, Guinea, and Haiti. Highlight is used by the Fire Department of New York and Kinnos was a grantee of the USAID Fighting Ebola Grand Challenge. The company has received recognition including the Lemelson-MIT Student Prize, Collegiate Inventors Competition, and Columbia Venture Competition, and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Scientific American, and Forbes 30 Under 30 in Healthcare. Kinnos is led by CEO Jason Kang. Financially, Kinnos recently closed a $1M seed round led by Georgica Advisors with participation from New York Angels, VentureWell, and other strategic angel investors.

    Participated · Equity · Feb 2023

  • Spill

    Led · Seed · Jan 2023

Spill is a social media platform founded and led by Alphonzo Terrell, the former global head of editorial at Twitter, that focuses on live video conversations called “Tea Parties” and community-driven features. The app has added social gaming — a live, multiplayer Spades game that averages about 30 minutes per game — which has materially improved user retention. Spill has been building an advertising business and has closed test campaigns with entertainment partners like Paramount+; average ad spend per campaign on the platform has increased by 400%. The company reported roughly 200,000 users around the time it raised a $2 million seed extension last year. Management says Spill is on track to cross $1 million in annualized revenue next year and is continuing to develop additional products and innovations. The platform positions itself as a safer, community-centered space for Black, Brown, and LGBTQIA users to discuss cultural and civic issues. Spill is a social networking app built to center Black, queer, women and non-binary communities, and it emphasizes community-driven experiences over algorithmic engagement. The app is still in invite-only beta and has grown to roughly 200,000 users since its June beta launch. Its product includes features like Tea Party, a live-hosted experience similar to Instagram Live, which has featured celebrity hosts such as Kerry Washington. Spill has attracted advertising partners including Netflix, Lionsgate, VH1, Showtime and Sony Pictures, and says it has not paid for user acquisition to date. The company plans to exit beta and open to the public next year and has stated intentions to pay creators for cultural contributions on the platform. Spill’s leadership includes founder and CEO Alphonzo Terrell, who started the company after being laid off from Twitter and built the initial pitch with former colleague DeVaris Brown. Spill is building a social feed where users post short messages called “spills” and can host in-app and IRL events called “tea parties.” The app emphasizes meme culture with easy tools for adding text to images and GIFs, and plans to surface and credit creators who start trends using blockchain technology (explicitly not paying out in crypto). The team is small—fewer than 10 employees—and includes three strategic advisors: Dantley Davis, April Reign, and DeRay Mckesson. CTO DeVaris Brown is developing an AI moderation model designed to understand Black dialects and reduce false offensive flags. Spill has accrued 60,000 handle reservations since its December reveal and plans an alpha launch in the first quarter of the year. The company will use funding to expand the team and hire for engineering and community management roles.
