New Brunswick Innovation Foundation

40 Crowther Lane, Suite 110, Fredericton, New Brunswick, E3C 0J1, Canada

Overview

Starting a new research project or company often requires more capital than any one source can give. Since many financial institutions consider startups and R&D “too risky,” some of the most commercially viable projects simply fall through the cracks and die. But not in New Brunswick. At NBIF our venture capital and research funding fills the gap so many innovators fall through, so they can break through. What sets us apart from traditional capital providers is the way we do business. Instead of lending, we make investments in your companyâ€:tm:s equity. Instead of making research grants, the funding we provide attaches certain rights to the intellectual property you develop so we can help commercialize it. And the money we make? It goes right back into the Foundation so we can get even more research projects and companies going—over and over again. Letting us invest in you lets you invest in New Brunswick, too. Itâ€:tm:s what makes us unique. Whether it starts in a university laboratory, or on the desktop of a budding entrepreneur, our aim is to build New Brunswickâ€:tm:s capacity to innovate and create commercial opportunities for our five strategic industries. With $40 million under management, the investments we've made have allowed our researchers and companies to leverage over $160 million more in additional capital.

  • Elle MD

    Participated · Seed · Jul 2026

Elle MD is developing a non-hormonal, easily removable vaginal contraceptive ring intended as a new option for birth control. The company has assembled a team including founder Jennifer Johnston, MD and several named contributors and advisors. It secured C$1.1 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed financing round to advance its program. The immediate plan for the capital is to enable the company's First-in-Human clinical trial at The Ottawa Hospital. The fundraising included multiple institutional and regional investors and local funds. No revenue, user metrics, prior valuations, or earlier funding rounds were disclosed in the announcement.

  • Picketa Systems

    Participated · Seed · Jun 2026

Picketa Systems develops a portable leaf-evaluated nutrient system (LENS) that uses optical spectroscopy and machine learning to estimate 13 key crop nutrients in minutes, coupled with a Fieldbook software platform to deliver recommendations to growers and agronomists. LENS has been validated against third-party laboratory chemical testing and the company works with institutions including the University of Guelph, University of Missouri, University of Nebraska–Lincoln and Cornell to build its calibration dataset. The technology has been validated on potatoes, corn and canola and is being expanded to soybeans and wheat, with cotton, onions and tomatoes in the pipeline. Picketa’s go-to-market has reached 45 agricultural retailers in North America and users include grower Chris Weaver; the company charges $10,000 (USD) per year for hardware, unlimited sampling, support and Fieldbook access, with 10% of that fee allocated to lab validation. Management says Fieldbook recommendations can help reduce fertilizer costs by up to 20% and enable more granular, region- and variety-specific nutrient guidance. The company plans to scale adoption across more crops and geographies as it commercializes the LENS technology.

  • Lastwall

    Participated · Series A · May 2026

Lastwall develops IDCommand, an identity verification platform that assesses over 200 characteristics of each login attempt—such as keystroke cadence, mouse movement, and hardware configuration—to prompt additional authentication and alert security teams when anomalous activity is detected. The company pursued enterprise-grade customers from the outset, working with the U.S. Department of Defense and earning FedRAMP Moderate Authorization for use across the U.S. federal ecosystem. Lastwall’s technology is positioned to protect government agencies and critical infrastructure providers across North America, and the company plans to scale its deployments with the new financing. Leadership highlighted the growing threat of nation-state cyberattacks and the expanding blast radius of identity compromise in the AI era as drivers for demand. The company has existing investors including Blue Bear Capital, 18West, and Blue Wing Ventures, and noted the possibility of future fundraising and venture debt from banking partners.

  • pHathom Technologies

    Participated · Seed · Feb 2026

pHathom Technologies, founded in 2024, is a Canadian climate-tech company building a platform that captures biogenic CO₂ from coastal bioenergy and industrial plants and converts it into stable dissolved inorganic carbon that naturally occurs in seawater. The treated water is then returned under closely matched conditions, eliminating the need for pipelines, long-distance transport, or geological injection while operating within current industrial footprints. The process is engineered for high standards of scientific measurement and third-party verification, aiming to deliver durable and auditable carbon removal credits. pHathom is piloting its technology through the $16 million Bioenergy Carbon Capture and Marine Storage Project backed by Canada’s Ocean Supercluster. Market validation includes selection for Frontier’s advanced purchase of carbon-removal credits and recognition as Foresight’s 2025 Atlantic Canada Startup of the Year. Financially, the company has secured more than $12 million in committed capital, including a recently closed $4 million seed equity round. The fresh funds will accelerate pilot deployments, expand scientific monitoring, and support regulatory engagement for broader commercialization.

  • Versos

    Led · Seed · Dec 2025

Versos is building what it claims is the world’s first marketplace dedicated to providing rights-cleared video datasets for artificial-intelligence developers. Its core product, the forthcoming "Video Intelligence Platform," will allow AI teams to source, license, and manage high-quality video training data from a network of studios. The Saint John–based startup intends to use its marketplace to solve the data-scarcity and licensing challenges that often hamper computer-vision and multimodal model development. Fresh seed capital will be directed toward accelerating product development, expanding studio onboarding processes, and preparing for the platform’s public launch. Prior to the current round, Versos secured CAD 1.5 million via a simple agreement for future equity (SAFE), indicating early investor confidence. Although the company has not disclosed revenue or user metrics, its total external funding now stands at CAD 3.35 million when combining the SAFE and seed rounds.
