- EvolOH
Participated · Series A · Mar 2024
Evoloh designs and manufactures alkaline electrolyzers using inexpensive, domestically sourced components and roll-to-roll printing to cut production costs and simplify transport and installation. The company’s core product is a compact electrolyzer stack built around alkaline electrolysis, which avoids expensive noble metals and enables a cost advantage. Evoloh emphasizes manufacturing innovation rather than novel membrane materials, aiming to commoditize stacks if hydrogen demand scales. Founder Jimmy Rojas, who worked on hydrogen and energy systems at Stanford and at Baruch Future Ventures, launched the company to address manufacturing, logistics, and supply-chain issues in electrolyzer production. The company expects its first factory to be operational by the end of next year and intends to produce 3.75 gigawatts of electrolyzers at full capacity. Evoloh recently raised an oversubscribed $20 million Series A to refine its manufacturing process, run large-scale pilots, and sign paying customers.
- APERIO
Participated · Series A · Aug 2023
Aperio provides a software platform that detects and fixes poor operational data quality at scale through visualization, prioritization, and remediation. The system ingests operational customer data captured in historians, databases, and data lakes and evaluates its quality using proprietary machine learning engines. Aperio's platform is designed to help industry leaders improve operational performance, mitigate risks, and enable data-driven decision making to deliver data services. Earlier in the year the company released APERIO DataWise 2.0, which added comprehensive root cause analysis and event pattern recognition and improved workflows and issue prioritization. The company intends to use the new funding to grow the team, invest in the product, and improve the customer experience. Aperio is led by CEO Jonas Hellgren and is based in Boston, MA. Aperio Systems offers an industrial data integrity platform that automatically validates operational data at scale using machine learning and AI. Its solution validates data in real time so organizations can reduce operational expenses, make better-informed strategic decisions, and turn validated industrial data into a competitive asset. Aperio serves global customers across sectors including refining, mining, manufacturing, power utilities, process manufacturing, oil & gas, and chemical processing where data integrity is crucial. The company highlights that data integrity has become the number-one inhibitor to maximizing ROI in digital solutions, with over 50% of data science budgets dedicated to cleaning data quality. With the new capital, Aperio plans to scale its industry-first IIoT data integrity solution and provide comprehensive, long-term support for global industrial leaders. Financially, the company has closed an $8.5M Series A to fund that expansion. Aperio Systems develops ML‑based tools that detect when physical sensor data in power plants and industrial sites has been forged by analysing normally filtered sensor noise to create individual sensor fingerprints. The system can both flag tampering and often reveal the underlying physical state so operators can choose between emergency shutdowns or controlled responses. Its solution integrates without requiring changes to existing plant setups. The company says it is currently active mostly in Israel and Europe, has begun work with a customer in Australia, and is evaluating expansion into Asia and the U.S. Aperio has about a dozen employees, mostly engineers. It plans to use the new funding to improve its core technology, build additional customer tools, and expand into new geographies.
- Lula
Participated · Series B · Aug 2023
Lula provides an insurance API and a broader insurance platform that includes risk management, claims management, policy management and access to coverage. The company started by targeting car rental and sharing platforms and has expanded into trucking and logistics, including a pay-for-time-on-road trucking product and driver vetting tools. Lula reports rapid customer growth from 99 businesses in February 2022 to nearly 4,000 as of July, and monthly revenue has multiplied 20x since February 2022. The company declined to share hard revenue figures but expects to pass $100 million in annual recurring revenue over the next three to four quarters and says the new capital will get it to profitability in the next couple of quarters. Customers and partners include Kyte, Turo and State National. Lula emphasizes capital efficiency and unit economics and had a roughly 115-person team at the time of the report. Lula provides insurance infrastructure via an API and a technology-enabled suite including customer vetting, fraud detection, driver-history checks, policy management and claims handling through insurance partners. The company evolved from a college-era car-rental app built by 25-year-old twin founders Michael and Matthew Vega-Sanz and pivoted to insurance infrastructure in April 2020, launching an MVP in August 2020. Lula reports roughly 30% month-over-month growth after reaching profitability within its first four months and has a waiting list of nearly 2,000 companies. Existing clients include ReadyDrive and a number of SMBs; Flexport — an investor — will run a pilot integrating short-duration insurance for truckers and cargo coverage at point of sale. The raise is intended to build the team to meet demand and further develop the technology, including more granular data collection, vetting systems, and a more robust API. Ultimately the company aims to operate as a carrier in some capacity while continuing to expand its insurance infrastructure offering.
- Modern Hydrogen
Led · Series B · May 2023
Modern Hydrogen's core product is a pyrolysis technology that strips carbon from natural gas and biogas to produce clean hydrogen onsite and a solid carbon coproduct. The company says its approach delivers decarbonized gas without reliance on new hydrogen pipelines or large infrastructure upgrades. When paired with biogas, the firm asserts its process can generate net negative emissions by capturing verifiable tons of solid carbon for use in products and building materials. Modern plans to scale up the capacity of its hydrogen production units, expand its clean carbon material offerings, and grow its global market presence through a partnership with Miura in Japan. The company announced a rebrand from Modern Electron to Modern Hydrogen while continuing to serve utilities, biogas, industrial manufacturing, and C&I heating equipment customers. Modern Hydrogen was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in Bothell, Wash. Modern Electron makes compact thermionic converters that turn furnace heat into electricity and is developing the Modern Electron Reserve to reduce methane into hydrogen and solid carbon (graphite). The thermionic converter is about the size of a soda can and is designed to integrate with existing HVAC systems without increasing volume. The Reserve produces hydrogen for use in the furnace and yields roughly a kilogram or two of graphite dust per day as a solid carbon byproduct, which the company presents as a form of sequestration or potential industrial feedstock. The company positions its technology to decarbonize homes, medium-size industry, and buildings that are too small for large-scale fuel-cell or industrial infrastructure. Modern Electron says it will pursue pilot tests with major HVAC OEMs in the next year and is hiring, especially around the Seattle area. The product roadmap emphasizes integration with existing furnaces and HVAC providers rather than full-system replacement.
