Overview

Vancity is one of Canada’s largest credit unions, with $17.1 billion in assets, more than 492,000 members and 57 branches throughout Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, Victoria and Squamish. As a financial institution, how we invest and operate affects your community's well-being. It's a responsibility that we take seriously. That's why our values-based banking model is grounded in the local economy—because we believe you only truly prosper when you're connected to a vibrant, healthy community. As a financial co-operative, we exist for the sole benefit of our members and their communities. We offer excellent service, financial advice and competitive products and services to help you build your own wealth. Then we use your deposits to lend and invest in local business and organizations that create positive economic, social and environmental impact in your community. This results in benefits like jobs created or supported, greenhouse gas emissions saved, and increased home ownership. Next we share a percentage of our net profits with our members and the community. We are a Living Wage Employer, which means that our minimum hourly wage reflects what people need to support their families based on the actual costs of living in their community. We are also a member of the Global Alliance for Banking on Values, a network of the world’s leading sustainable banks sharing the commitment to achieving triple-bottom-line impact through responsible banking practices.

    Led · Debt Financing · Feb 2017

CoPower operates an online investment platform that finances community-scale clean energy projects such as LED lighting retrofits and geothermal heating and cooling for homes. Its core product is the Green Bond, a retail-investable instrument that allows participation with a $5,000 minimum and offers up to 5% interest annually. Green Bonds are distributed through CoPower’s online platform and select financial advisors and brokerages. To date, CoPower has raised over $12 million in loans for community clean-energy projects. The company recently completed a $2 million equity financing round to scale its investment platform. Management says the proceeds will help the company serve clients and advance its vision of providing simple financial products that deliver solid returns while financing the clean energy economy. CoPower is a Canadian clean energy investment platform that enables retail investors to finance clean energy infrastructure through Green Bonds and related green investment products. Its core model uses a revolving credit facility to make senior, secured loans to a portfolio of clean energy projects; proceeds from retail Green Bond sales are then used to purchase that loan portfolio. The company planned to issue a $20 million Green Bond on March 1 and reported $10 million in assets under management. CoPower's stated mission is to empower Canadians to participate in and profit from the transition to a clean energy future and to make impact investing accessible. The firm relies on impact investors and foundations to seed and expand its credit facility, which is designed to be revolved multiple times to mobilize more capital and broaden retail access.

  • QuickMobile

    Participated · Equity · Oct 2012

QuickMobile is a Vancouver-based provider of mobile solutions that builds branded mobile apps for meetings and events. Led by President and CEO Patrick Payne, the company partners with meeting owners and organizers to develop apps that act as catalysts for year-round conversations with constituents. Its solutions aim to create always-on communications channels that allow event owners to extend their brand and interactions with customers, partners, stakeholders and employees beyond the days and locations of an event. The company recently closed on a $3.3M funding round following $2.6M of investments received in 2011. QuickMobile intends to use the capital to expand internationally, strengthen its infrastructure, boost marketing efforts and advance the development and launch of new products and services. As part of the financing, a partner from the lead investor will join the company’s board. QuickMobile develops interactive mobile event guides that attendees can download to their mobile devices or access via a mobile-friendly website. Its apps provide attendee lists, conference agendas, sponsor and speaker information, social networking, media galleries, conference materials, venue maps, location-based services, sponsorship monetization, and gamification features. The company offers one-time event apps and apps for event series and counts clients such as the World Economic Forum, Accenture, Google, Microsoft, SAP, Intel, Cisco, Dell, Hilton, and Disney. QuickMobile experienced rapid operational growth, expanding from 12 to 60 employees, developing 45 apps last year and more than 300 apps so far in 2011, and achieving over one million downloads; revenue figures are not publicly shared. It was ranked the 12th fastest growing company in British Columbia by Business in Vancouver and highlights sustainability benefits—one customer eliminated 90,000 printed pages and became 100% paperless. The company will use the new funding to broaden the scope of its AI, including new administrative tasks. QuickMobile develops customized mobile apps and mobile websites for conferences, festivals and corporate events, offering features such as social media tools, real-time content updating, analytics, personal scheduling and rich media. The company emphasizes bespoke implementations rather than templated solutions, having built apps for Dreamforce (Android, BlackBerry, iPhone with Salesforce Chatter), Tribeca (iPhone app and HTML5 mobile site) and Sundance (iPhone). Its client roster includes Accenture, Cisco, Dell, Disney, World Economic Forum, GBTA, Google, Hilton, Intel, Microsoft, PhocusWright and SAP. QuickMobile cites a large addressable market—205 million people attend 1.8 million meetings annually in the U.S., and under a tenth of those events offer interactive mobile applications. The company says it is on pace to record a 500% increase in bookings versus 2010. The new funding will be used to support new product development and to expand internationally.
