Invizius is an Edinburgh-based biotech developing H-Guard, a surface-coating therapy flushed through dialysis machines to reduce the inflammatory response when patients' blood contacts machine surfaces. H-Guard aims to prevent immune reactions that can cause organ and cardiovascular damage in dialysis patients. A 'First in Human' study earlier this year demonstrated safety, tolerability and produced encouraging biomarker data. The new funding will support preparation for the next stage of clinical trials and the design of a trial for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) to assess immune modulation and reduction of renal tubule damage. The company plans to advance into Phase 2B trials and continue research into additional patient benefits for H-Guard. Financially, the latest raise brings Invizius's total capital raised to over £13m. Invizius has established the regulatory pathway in North America and sees potential for coincident approval in Europe. The company intends to use the Series A funds to complete a First-in-Man safety study in 2022. It is also looking to expand its product pipeline into other high-value indications. Invizius is a University of Edinburgh spinout advancing dialysis technology to reduce cardiovascular risk in long-term dialysis patients. Its lead product, H-Guard™, is an anti-inflammatory 'primer' designed to coat filter surfaces so that when mixed with a patient's blood the surface appears less foreign to the immune system. The company plans to use the recent funds to build its team and advance the product toward the next stage of development ahead of clinical trials. The technology was developed from years of research by biologist Dr Andy Herbert (CTO) and his team, and the company is led by CEO Richard Boyd. Although the first application targets kidney dialysis, Invizius sees potential to apply the coating to other devices and procedures such as catheters, stents, organ transplants and vascular grafts. Invizius secured £500k from Mercia Fund Managers in the company's latest financing; the investment followed Mercia's partnership with the University of Edinburgh announced in November 2017.
