  • Atrium LTS

    Participated · Equity · Jun 2017

Atrium uses machine learning to ingest and structure legal documents and builds apps that automate time-consuming legal work, for example converting funding documents into Excel cap tables. The company combines engineering and legal teams to offer faster, cheaper, and more predictable legal services and to enable upfront pricing. Atrium has grown rapidly to about 110 employees and serves roughly 250 clients, including startups such as Bird and MessageBird. Justin Kan leads the company alongside co-founder Augie Rakow and long-term partner Nick Cortes after two co-founders transitioned out. With new capital it plans to develop internal tooling and expand its platform so other legal and professional services can be built on top. Atrium also acquired YC AI startup Tetra (which had raised $1.5M) to help build its document-understanding platform. Atrium LTS (Legal Technology Services) is building software to improve delivery of legal work by applying technology to repeatable processes in corporate legal work. The team aims to bring project-management style tools to law firms and clients to track deal progress and increase transparency. Founder Justin Kan framed the product as automating repeatable legal tasks while leaving the 'art' of legal work to lawyers. The company is still ironing out regulatory issues and has been reticent to disclose full technical details, though it shared a screenshot showing it used its own tools during the fundraising process. Atrium intends to enlist investors and industry stakeholders as early customers and sources of feedback during product development to reach product-market fit. Financially, Atrium completed a $10.5 million fundraising round led by General Catalyst to support product development and go-to-market efforts.
