  • Hydnum Steel

    Led · Equity · Aug 2026

Hydnum Steel is developing what it describes as the first clean-steel factory in the Iberian Peninsula, with an expected annual flat-steel production capacity of 2.7 million tonnes. The plant’s process eschews fossil fuels in favor of electric-arc furnaces powered by green hydrogen and 100% renewable electricity, aiming to cut Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by up to 98% relative to traditional blast-furnace methods. The facility will be fully digitalized and incorporate technologies such as Arvedi ESP continuous strip production and a Zero Liquid Discharge water-treatment system to maximize water reuse. The total project investment is expected to exceed €1.5 billion and to generate more than 5,000 jobs across its phases, including over 1,000 direct technically skilled positions. Hydnum Steel has obtained initial approval as a Proyecto de Singular Interés, cleared key environmental and hydrological permits, secured 500 MW of grid access, and aims to start earthworks and construction in late 2026. The project has been recognized by the World Economic Forum among leading industrial decarbonization initiatives and reports offtake agreements covering first-phase capacity for the initial five years.
