ZuriQ, spun out of ETH Zürich by Dr Pavel Hrmo, Dr Tobias Sägesser and Dr Shreyans Jain, has developed a native two-dimensional trapped-ion architecture that combines electric and static magnetic fields to allow ions to move and connect in two and three dimensions. The company has demonstrated a working 3×3 array of nine individually controlled ions — the largest two-dimensional array of its kind to date — built in collaboration with ETH Zürich and fabricated with partner Infineon. ZuriQ says its architecture is designed to scale qubit counts with chip area, targeting a path toward hundreds to thousands of qubits on a single chip. The company developed its demonstrator in 18 months and has expanded its headcount from four to eighteen since its last funding.
