  • SkySQL

    Participated · Seed · Dec 2024

SkySQL is a San Francisco, CA–based database management company offering a cloud-native solution for MySQL and MariaDB with integrated AI and serverless capabilities. Its platform combines traditional database functionality with AI features including SkyCopilot for query optimization, Semantic Agents, and a conversational API to enable accurate, secure, and reliable AI responses. The service provides serverless auto-scaling (including scale-to-zero) to reduce costs and operates across 40+ regions and multiple cloud providers for multi-cloud flexibility. Continuous availability is supported via multi-zone replication, automated backups, and self-healing clusters. The company serves over 40 customers globally. SkySQL said it will use the newly raised $6.6M to expand operations and accelerate development efforts. The company was founded by Nithin Rao, Jags Ramnarayan, and Saravana Krishnamurthy. SkySQL focuses on supporting and developing MariaDB, the fast-growing open-source relational database that has been adopted by projects like Wikipedia and major Linux distributions. The company offers support services, assists migrations from MySQL, provides bug fixes, and develops commercial offerings for scaling the MariaDB server. SkySQL launched a service for scaling databases on Amazon Web Services to help administrators and less-technical end users manage instances, reconfigure nodes, and handle backups and restores. The company plans to invest in the MariaDB open-source project, deepen integration with NoSQL technologies, and capitalize on the NewSQL trend combining transactional and scale-out features. In April the company merged with Monty Program, reuniting original members of the MySQL AB team, which the article cites as strengthening SkySQL’s pedigree. The company recently raised funding to support these product and community initiatives. SkySQL today operates mainly as a services business, supporting existing MySQL customers in a model likened to RedHat servicing Linux. The company has backing from the former founders of MySQL and recently closed additional funding to expand support operations. It raised another €2 million in Series A funding from California Technology Ventures (CTV), bringing its total funding to €6 million. SkySQL plans to develop a cloud-based product/platform that will gradually handle more of the heavy lifting and provide an alternative migration path for users who want to avoid Oracle. Leadership changes include Patrik Sallner being named CEO (formerly VP of Professional Services at F‑Secure) and Ulf Sandberg moving to lead the U.S. operation as President of SkySQL Inc. The article frames SkySQL’s opportunity as a window created by EU competition rules that constrain Oracle for the next five years.
